As seen by Jacob and Esau, both are basically different from one another in many ways. Where Jacob is smooth skinned, Esau is has hairy skin, where Jacob is clean, Esau is dirty, and so on. When Jacob steals Esau’s blessing from his father, Esau is raged at Jacob and even declared that he would kill him once his father draws his last breath. Even after Jacob steals Esau’s blessing, he himself doesn’t receive another for himself, or even a minor blessing, there is only the curse bestowed upon Jacob to serve Esau forever. It makes Jacob look like he was never blessed by Isaac at all. Interestingly, instead of Jacob receiving a privilege, he gets a curse. Jacob gets cursed from Laban and causes him to do twice the amount of service required originally. This is just one of the opposite relationships found in this book. Another interesting thing found in these few chapters is the renaming of Jacob to Israel. At first Jacob meets God in disguise as a man who physically wrestles Jacob till dawn. He then desires a blessing from him, and he blesses Jacob renaming him Israel. In this book, the renaming of someone had some sort of significance, and in a way defined who they were. For example, when God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, Abram means and exalted father, but Abraham means father of many. Similarly, Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah because Sarai means princess, but Sarah means princess of …show more content…
These two daughters fought against each other for Jacob strangely in how many more children they bore with him. Not only this, but the daughters even bragged about this. In chapter 29, there is an entire chapter dedicated to explaining the conflict between daughters for Jacob. In the text it asserts, “‘Finish out the bridal week of this one and we shall give you the other as well for the service you render me for still another seven years.’ And so Jacob did” (155). This quote strongly supports how Jacob is working for the hand of one of Laban’s daughters. In a way, it seems like the daughters would had threw themselves on Jacob if their father wasn’t there to stop it. As seen on page 156, after Leah bore a child with Jacob, she thought that the Lord has seen her suffering in birth and therefore Jacob must love her. It also seems that when Leah bore any more sons with Jacob, she sees it as the Lord's doings, and believes that the Lord supports their marriage. “‘Yes, the LORD has heard I was despised and bore a son, and He has given me this one, too,’” (156). As seen from this chapter, strangely, he has been cursed and has to work for

Isaac became the second of the Patriarch's, spelled Yitshaq in ancient Hebrew, as the only son of Abraham and Sarah and according to the Old Testament becomes the first newborn boy to be circumcised at just eight days old. In order to test Abraham's faith, God requests that Abraham builds an altar for the purpose of sacrificing his young son Isaac. As requested, Abraham constructs the altar, ties his son to the altar, prepares to sacrifice Isaac when an angel tells Abraham to release his son and instead sacrifice a male goat. When Isaac becomes 40 years of age, he marries Rebekah, who for many years could not have children. Not only did God ask Abraham to follow him, but he also promised to bless him and make of his descendants a great nation. When God commands Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his beloved son, Abraham is ready to obey God, but God chooses not to require the sacrifice. I believe that this is an important step in the relationship of God with his people, as it shows how much God loves his people if they follow God’s will. The promise of God to Abraham and his descendants is something that can be found through the history of Christianity. The promise of God continued from Abraham to Isaac, to Jacob (known as Israel) and then to Joseph (Jacob’s son) who God used to take Abraham descendants to a secure place (Egypt).…

The book of Genesis is brimming with tales of tricksters and deceit, yet this theme appears, at first glance, to be a contradiction to the morality lessons for which the Bible is known. However, when one examines the stories of Abraham and Tamar, a principle becomes evident: trickery is often the only weapon available to the weak. In Genesis 12:10-13, Abraham is entering Egypt when he decides to trick Pharaoh by claiming his wife Sarah is merely his sister. In this situation, Pharaoh and his whole household are inflicted with disease though they knew nothing of the lie.…

Response Paper 1 Introduction Genesis is the first book of the Bible that essentially delves in depth into the advent of the world. The early chapters of the book- the first and the second chapters- explicitly elaborate the Christian perception of reality, the natural world and the beginning of life, and in its sense, describing the very purpose of human life. The first two chapters of Genesis cover a topic that is widely debated, with some scholars arguing that Genesis should be taken literally and others suggesting that the message disseminated by the book is not literal. The matter has brought great contention in the course of Christian history, in the process resulting in different denominations in the Christian faith. The first two chapters…

God’s relationship with Abraham and Jacob is a friendship relationship similar to that of Athena and Odysseus, because both Gods provide protection for their human companions, promote the legacy of their humans, and challenge the relationship both their chosen and themselves. At the core of both friendship relationships is faith and respect from the chosen humans towards their respective Gods, who in return bless the humans with divine acts. In this sense, both of their friendships are defined by their mutual exchanges. God and Athena both immensely guide and protect their human friends throughout their mortal adventures. Upon setting off to create a new, grand nation, Abraham is blessed by God who utters, “…I will make of thee a great nation,…

The term paper is written based on the comparison of the Genesis story with neighboring tales of ancient Israel. These stories and legends were told orally from generation to generation, creating a writing system developed in papyrus and stele. Today, we have access to that information through the studies of history and archeology, which have been important tools to get to know the ancient world. These stories are mostly myths and legends that marked the personal life, politics, and the economy and society of the ancient people (Thompson). The origin of these stories was entirely in the Middle East, including Egypt, Babylon and Sumer; Israel.…
