LOL BRB TTYL For the current generations, texting is an active part of their daily lives. More often than not, teenagers spend more time on their phones daily than anything else. But, it hasn’t always been this way. Believe it or not, texting has not always been around; in fact, texting is just barely over 20 years old. But, has this recent invention been beneficial to our culture? Or, has it damaged our culture and the generations of the future? Friedhelm Hillebrand first created the idea of Short Messaging System (SMS) in 1984 while he was sitting in front of his typewriter (Gayomali). He wanted to create an easier way for messages to be quickly exchanged between different people, since letters were so slow. He wanted the messages to be …show more content…
Textspeak is the language that was created solely for texting. It consists of abbreviated words such as LOL or BRB and condensed words like l8r, meaning ‘later’. Many parents were concerned about kids using this type of language because they believed it would ruin their spelling, reading and writing skills (McVeigh). These researchers stated that their experiment proved exactly the opposite. They said kids who can actively read and write in Textspeak have more developed reading and writing capabilities than those who cannot. They also have improved phonetic abilities and literacy skills (McVeigh). The scientists related Textspeak to another language and said that kids growing up using this, and English daily, is basically like the children growing up bilingual …show more content…
We both like to work ahead so we don’t stress the night before, which paid off a lot. We divided the work evenly and researched separate subtopics that we complied to make the complete presentation. We also created the slides for our own topics and then combined them for the final. Overall, I would say that Nikki was an excellent partner and I would definitely work with her again. I didn’t feel like either of us did a majority of the work, which is sometimes common in group projects. We communicated effectively and often, so that we were up to date with what we were both doing. We met before the presentation to practice and finalize everything, which gave us both a boost of confidence and the push we needed to be able to

Most teens prefer texting rather than talking out loud. There are things that they do not want their parents or anyone else to know about. Usually, teens do not like talking in public around others about our personal lives. Also, teenagers like to send their friends rather odd pictures of themselves, which can’t be done by talking on the phone. It is unlike business people to not carry a phone on them, using it to talk about their work or keeping in touch with family.…

One of my quirkiest traits―and a consistent topic of laughter amongst my friends―is my ever-present and never-fading habit of texting with perfect grammar. Semicolons, commas, and colons all make an appearance in my texting, a side effect of wanting to be a book editor when I grow up. Some might argue that because I use texting as a form of communication, my writing skills have regressed. Others argue that texting has actually benefitted my formal writing skills. In Michaela Cullington’s article, “Does Texting Affect Writing?”…

Since there were four of us thinking out loud at the same time it took more time than it usually would if I were working by myself. I didn't mind that it took more time, it was just that our schedule’s did not match very much so it was difficult to find a set time to work on it at after school. If we had spent a little more time thinking about when we would…

Although students can decide where to use what style there are still some errors that are present in writing that Shafie suggests come from texting. She states many times that there are small errors, but they are not large as if students are using a texting language in writing.…

Some teachers think that texting helps "foster the ability to summarize and express oneself concisely" (Cullington, 2010, p. 4). Another odd statement that teachers are stating is that texting “inhibits good writing” (Cullington, 2010, p. 3). Many students that text and use social media are not forming complete sentences and are using inappropriate or negative words. Something that was discovered that is very bizarre is that teenagers have “created an entirely new language” (Cullington, 2010, p. 5). To think that English is still evolving to this day and has been perfected and changed for so many years and we as young adults can create a whole language is unfathomable.…
