How Does Television Negatively Affected Society?

You are right. Postman did write about how television negatively impacted society. However, I believe there is a deeper meaning behind what he is writing about. Many of his points can still be applied to today’s world. Television did change how debates are handled today. As you mentioned you can now you watch them on television. Many people can actually fast forward through the commercials if they want to making the debates even shorter. Not only did television change the platform of debates, but it changed our society as a whole. Do people not watch the debates because they are long and boring, or because they feel they have no control? Postman mentioned this subject on page 69 when talking about the telegraph. I believe both are true. Some

In ‘Shuffle Off to Bethlehem,’ chapter 8 of Amusing Ourselves to Death, Neil Postman argues that television preachers have warped modern religion into another cheap form of entertainment. In support of his argument he makes the following three points: that the medium of television is inherently secular and therefore cannot properly convey religious messages; that television preachers must change their dogma for the sake of ratings; and that official places of worship create a better atmosphere then a television program could ever produce. Postman argues that the medium of television is inherently secular; therefore any religious message broadcast on television will be degraded in some way. Postman points out that people generally see watching…

The excerpt which meets the criteria of being rhetorically effective was written by the author of the best-selling 2000 book, Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, Robert D. Putman. Ethos has been established early on in the text as the speaker is a Harvard professor who also uses numerous sources to support his argument. Putman has written this passage in order to discuss the nature of television in American life and how it affects our relationship with our community. Rather than attacking or claiming that television is a determent, he chooses to analyze its effect on families throughout the years. The text targets a wide audience being the American community but it can be divided into smaller sections such as couples…

Postman states: “To put it plainly, television is the new command center of the new epistemology.” (Postman pg. 78) Because of the popularity of television, Postman says that, as a result, "all public understanding of these subjects is shaped by the biases of television" and that in the absence of rational discourse, damage can be done to the country and the culture within it. According to Neil Postman, the technology that poses perhaps the greatest problem is television. He is not concerned with the fact that it provides entertainment. This form of media technology is problematic because it is making people unintelligent by the minute. The reason for this is because the written or spoken communication is undermined and the image is seen as the source of the truth instead, where one does not care about how the image is being controlled.…

Here he explains how television erodes the dividing line between childhood and adulthood in three different ways. He continues to say that these three ways all have to do with its “undifferentiated accessibility” (80). He claims that television requires no instruction to grasp, that it doesn’t make complex demands on either mind or behavior and lastly it does not separate its audience. Postman argues that it is mainly the development of television that is eroding childhood. Although his arguments have some valid points there are still some problems…

After a long day’s work, we come home looking forward to our favorite TV show. For some it may be The Middle, Downton Abbey, or even Keeping Up with the Kardashians; all of these shows have changed the way we act and treat one another. One day we are the Lady Mary of Michigan and the next we are Kim Kardashian. Throughout the years we have gone from scripted comedies to more and more reality TV shows. One of the first reality TV shows that started it all for us was Survivor, but now over the years we have over 300 reality television shows (Yahr, Moore, and Chow).…

This show focused on sexual references and jokes, more than it did friendly humor to make the audience laugh. Even when the jokes were shameful, they were kind of humorous and made the show enjoyable to watch. This shows that today this behavior is found funny and is practiced by teens, too. This is shown by noticing that most of the jokes were sexual, even though there were some that were indeed not sexual. This poses the question: does what actions on TV shows affect the way the society acts today?…
