As the world grows many things grow also. Technology is one of many things that is always evolving. Technology has swept over the world and is a main inhabitant of everyday life. Does this use of technology have an effect on us? Is this effect good or bad? Many questions similar to these exist and some have been answered. Technology makes a person lonely when its use is the majority of a person’s social life. The use of technology ranges based on the technology used and how the user wishes to use the technology. For example, a person may use a cell phone to text a friend while another person may use the cell phone to research information online for a research paper. Society has been completely changed due to the introduction of the new technology. Technology has become a major part of everyday life and it changes the way we connect. People today rather sit around and text people than actually talk to the person face-to-face. Technology has even gone far enough to change our lives at home. A few decades ago, families sat at the dinner table and ate and talked with each other. Today, if a family is lucky enough to be eating at the same time and at the same place, there will most likely will be a phone being used or a television being watched. Change in connections also changes friends. People rather have “friends” online than actually be with their friends in real life. “For example, babies who are frequently handled when they are young grow bigger, have better muscle development and are generally healthier than those who do not experience this interaction” (Lonely.) Technology, while a great tool, has a missing closeness that only real life interactions can solve. Social skills are also better in people who get offline and talk to others. The time we are online talking is precious time that can be well spent and used for important things like being with family, reading a book, or going for a walk to get exercise. Some of the people that are created by users online are not the person making the profile. “Teens who say they rather talk than text express an aspect of new psychological affordances of the new technology, the possibility of hiding from everyone” (Price.) People are hidden behind perfect online persona that only shows a positive image of that person instead of all that the person is good and bad. Technology does not allow a person to fully understand a person. Everyone texts and sometimes a text can be interpreted differently than how the sender meant the text to be read. Socializing with the person face to face would not cause this confusion. The people having the conversation easily can look at the other person and know how they feel due to the body language of the other person. A person easily can show how they feel about something when they are talking to someone. Technology does

As technology becomes a more influential part of human society, questions are raised considering its impact on society. Clive Thompson’s article, Smarter than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better, addresses this issue by stating that technology has a positive effect on society. Jenna Wortham’s article, I Had a Nice Time with You Tonight. On the App., presents a similar argument, but takes a different approach, by making her argument more grounded in everyday life. Thompson’s analysis of how technology positively affects humanity can help shed light on Wortham’s observations about present day technology’s positive effects on communication.…

The age of the internet has allowed for several things to become easier and that includes making friends. Curtis Silver wrote about the messy and complex problem of making friends online and if they are real or not in “The Quagmire of Social Media Friendships.” Silver presents the conundrum of whether the term friend has become to mean less and less due to its online definition.…
