Why Is Technology Harmful To Our Society?

Improved Essays
Technology by far has become the number one thing you see everywhere. It has overrun our society while harming and damaging it. Technology was intended to help the world and make it better, yet, we have given that purpose a whole new meaning. Technology is often harmful to the human society because it affects both social skills and literacy levels. Social skills and communication skills are the most important survival skills needed in order to survive, yet, cellphones are taking that away. As a wise man once said, “Good communication is important because when we are adults and applying for interviews, we will not know how to have proper communication, which can result in not getting the job”(Stewart). Humans send many nonverbal cues, from fidgeting to foot tapping, long pauses to eye contact. Reading those signs is a skill “that young people are not learning when they are using these devices”(Bindley). These are just some of the basic things that technology can cause you to miss or understand. All these nonverbal cues and gestures signify something. Now imagine someone you love is dying and they are having an asthma attack, but you do not understand their nonverbal cues. All they are doing is forming a telephone-like signal and pointing towards their mouth. You stare at them for quite a while trying to figure out what they are trying to say, when in reality all they need is their inhaler. After a while they die and you figure out what they were trying to say, but by that time it will be too late. How bad would you feel when that loved one dies all because you could not understand their body language? Would you have guilt? How dumb would you feel? Spending most of the time on your cell phone can provoke an incident like this one, therefore, more attention should be placed on the world and not technology. Too much technology can cause you to miss out on significant life

Texting has become the main form of communication, so when kids get home, how can they look at each other in the eye if they just text? Another study has shown that children's social skills are affected negatively when they multitask with technology.…

Have you ever wondered about the advancements of technology and how as technology progresses and gets better, will society do the opposite and get worse? Whether it's good or bad, technology is taking over every part of society. In the article “Meet Your iBrain” by Gary Small and GiGi Vorgan, they talk about how technology is “alternating our brain”, and how it is also changing the way “we feel and behave,” especially our social skills. The first topic I will discuss is a negative side of technology, which is how technology could be affecting our social skills, ability to think clearly and concentrate, and make it harder for us to focus on…

Technology has been able to influence our minds too much, this is shown in both Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and then article “Is Google making us stupid?” by Nicholas Carr.…

Have you ever wondered how technology works or if is even good or bad for the people that use it or even for our society?
