In the twenty-first century, we are surrounded by people who have their neck inclined downwards looking at their digital devices and are met with text messages, Facebook notifications, and the latest entertainment videos without a care of bumping into someone. Having silence on the subway because people just want to have earphones in their ears and read their phones than have a face to face communication. As a result of this mass increase in technology that is now incorporated into our social lives for example schools with their educational apps that help kids, teens and young adults comprehend new information that they never knew before and Google that makes every curious question available in an instant, is now mostly having a negative effect …show more content…
Dr. Bauerlin states that teens, “Seek out what they already hope to find, and they want it fast and free, with a minimum of effort."(Drutman) I agree that Bauerlin’s statement of wanting things quickly is extremely useful because it sheds insight on the difficult problem of the younger generations wanting things given to us quicker than expected due to social media giving us everything in our hands. This idea intertwines with technology polluting our minds since media is always trying to get the attention of people to get into the fashion norm that younger generations are getting into fast fashion which is purchasing knock off brands from the internet that are trying to represent the actual brand, but it is much cheaper. This type of fast fashion mostly ruins our earth since people are throwing things away since they are not fashionable like they were a day ago. Another point is that people just don’t want to go out since they can see everything from the comfort of their phone which is also breaking the law because of copyright issues. In other words, our brain is polluted that we are forced to use to function properly in society. If we don 't use these digital devices we are known as no one or we are crazy for admiring the talented arts of this universe. Turkle emphasizes, “Those little devices in our pockets, are so psychologically powerful that they don 't only change what we do, they change who we are"(TEDtalks). In making this comment, Turkle argues that all these technologies have a psychological impact on our brains that pollute it to make ourselves happier, for example, a picture on social media that in different

There are now webcams, cell phones, Facebook, and many other forms of communication. I have already experienced this in my daily life. You hardly see people talking anymore, just look around when you go to a restaurant or walk around the mall. People are nose deep into their phones and intrigued at all the many forms of social media, or what is happening on the news. We forgot the importance of human interaction, and rely on technology more than anything else.…

As a society today in 21st century America, humans are becoming more and more like the smartphones they carry around in their pockets, and the computers that lay dormant in backpacks as they shuffle from class to class or ride the subway to work. Technology is becoming more and more of a predominant factor in our every day lives. Think about it. We use technology everywhere, whether it be in school, at work, at home, or even in the car. In Richard Restak’s Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era and Bill Wasik’s…

There is so much in the current world that takes away from the way things used to be. Something as gigantic as the innovation of the cellular phone, or something as little as advertisements in the trays at a security checkpoint in the airport, both take away from the possibility of having a moment of solitude in life. Surfing the internet one can find a multitude of different articles chastising the progression of technology, and how it negatively affects society, but one will not find any legitimate research to back up such claims. Two articles, “Stop Googling, Let’s Talk,” and “The Cost of Paying Attention” follow the same form containing large amounts of anecdotal information while lacking genuine evidence. Both rely heavily on logos…

Imagine a world filled with silence, an environment that exclude people from communicating with one another, and the norm of physical interaction seems abnormalrobots, roaming abandoned streets and depending on installed programs to behave a certain way, just plain old machines burning on energy. The sweet sound of loud busy streets will slowly become inactive and people will soon depend on installed programs on their phone to function a certain way. Humans have regress in their abilities to incorporate their intercommunication skills. This make their life harder to live because people need communication to live an emotionally happy life. I believe what Turkle is saying is that when we are constantly texting and on these technological devices, we have a sense of connectivity. This causes one to think that engaging in social networks and other activities on phones is a necessity to live. When we interacting connected to those online, we are actually dissociating ourselves from the people around us. This precondition effects some of the most important aspects of life, which include the sense of self and relationships to people and…

Does Technology Allow Relationships to Thrive? Sitting at the dinner table with my family, all that is heard is the clinking of utensils against our plates, some obnoxious chewing coming from my younger brother, and the beeps and rings of multiple phones. More texting, tweeting, instagraming, and the use of technology occurs at the dinner table than actual conversation. My family went from asking about each other’s days and asking how school and work are going to not even looking up from their phones.…

From personal experience, I can relate to this topic. At times, I have moments of leisure, but instead of using it to socialize with my peers, I use technology. Turkle then implies that having time alone is crucial to our mental sanity and staying constantly connected to technology is constraining. “They need time to discover themselves, time to think. But technology, put in the service of always-on communication and telegraphic speed and brevity, has changed the rules of engagement with all of this” (430).…

Turkle uses logical and emotional appeals while using strategic wording and organization to convince the intended audience that the access to internet everywhere is taking over face to face conversations. Turkle uses the appeal of logic to make the audience think about how much their phone is a part of their daily life. She includes a study by the Pew Research Center which states, “89 percent of cell phone owners said they had used their phones during their last social gathering they attended; 82 percent of adults felt that the way they used their phones in social settings hurt the conversations” (Turkle). The purpose of using this specific study is to back up her explanation that the excess use of cell phones are hurting day to day…

Taylor Oberpriller The Dumbest Generation 1/5/15 ⅚ B The current under 30 generation is the dumbest generation ever. Just because of the fact that we have access to more advanced technology and knowledge of the use of that technology, it could also be argued that the same technology has disconnected this generation from real peer contact, common sense problem solving skills, connection to writing skills, and critical thinking which has put the under 30 generation at a disadvantage and has, in so many ways made us lazy and dumb.…

THE DEFINING THEME OF OUR AGE The twenty first century, or our age, is one of the first ages to come close the “future” of mankind, so far at least. Our inventions pushing us into the new age and pushing out the block phones and the tiny televisions of the 1900’s. Creating a century only to be known as the Worry age. Our children in this century are so used to the easy “hands-on” way of electronics.…

In the new age of technology today, one that is constantly modifying and updating to the best features the market has to offer, it is safe to say that the availability to share thoughts, feelings, and ideas with people all around the world has become increasingly easier. Now families with students in different parts of the country can talk on a daily basis through cell phone usage and the apps on them. A CEO in China can seal the deal in an international business arrangement with minimal clicks and some conversation on a computer – faster and more efficient in turning more deals and making more profit.
