How Does Technology Affect Nursing Practice

I’ve seen nursing technology affect the nurses practice over the years. I have worked in the medical field for 7 years in the psychiatric and senior care facility. When I started working in the medical field as a CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) the technology helping with direct patient care has changed dramatically. Many people assume there’s risk of nursing technology provides. They believe there are sometimes medical errors and not having proper direct patient care training. Although I agree nursing technology usage is helpful for nurse’s careers by making direct patient care number one priority. This is why I think nursing technology helps improving direct patient care and reducing medical errors. Spending more time with patients rather than being focused on doing other things that can lead to human medical errors.
There’s so many technology nurses use oximeter, vital sign monitor, EHR, telemetry monitors, and cardiac monitors, etc. One of the software nurses use is very important and you’ll learn to use it when you get into the nursing school, it’s called Electronic Health Records (EHR). When nurses adapt to new technology, they sometimes fail to focus on checking the monitors that detect changes in patient’s status. There could be devices malfunction and sometimes there is no proper training on the new technology. Reducing medical errors always has been an issue and it will always will be. According to Deb Zimmermann in the article from American Nurse Today “An emphasis on a culture of safety and appropriate use of technology help the organization deliver safer and more efficient health care.” In other words, Deb Zimmerman believes the nursing technology can be safe and effective for health care.
