It is known that when students are suspended, they do not come to school for a certain amount of time. When the student is suspended, they aren’t taught, but they are given all the work that they missed. Just doing the work does not teach the student what they need to know. If the student was suspended for a month and when they got back they had to take state tests do you really think they would be well prepared? Some may argue that they could just ask the teacher for help, and I do agree asking for help could make a difference, but the student still is not learning as well as other students in the classroom because they are not

In his article, “Don’t Suspend Students Empathize”, David Kirp writes of the challenge educators face in regards to disciplining their students. Kirp, a college professor and senior fellow at the Learning Policy Institute, clearly holds education in high regard. The article broaches the topic of suspending students, and Kirp’s strong feelings towards the matter. He suggests instead of immediately suspending students, educators should empathize along with disciplining the students, doing so by teachers trying to view the world from an adolescent’s point of view. The article is published to inform parents and educators, is written using the persuasive techniques of ethos, pathos, and logos, in an easy to read manner and posing questions, creating…

In today’s society we are introduced to many problems that are always put to the side and is never taken care of because people are so in denial and don’t want to face the truth. In the simpsons intro the writer uses satire( the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues) to explore the flaws of society through his made up fictional characters. Some issues that I have come to a realization are the fact that parents in this century are not paying enough attention to their children and holding them fully responsible for their own actions. In other words children are doing whatever they please with no care whatsoever in the world because they know that there is no consequences for their actions. This also causes these children and teens to misbehave in class which leads to a distraction that takes away learning from kids whom parents actually send them to school to learn.…

The National Association of School Psychologists describes zero tolerance policies as school enforced polices that mandate harsh predetermined punishments; typically involving suspension or expulsion. These polices can be implemented for a wide variety of reasons, but were commonly regarded as a solution to school bullying. Critics and scientific researchers often advice against using these polices, which have been shown to have an adverse effect on students of urban backgrounds. Out-of-school suspensions are statistically proven to deter students from receiving a high school diploma; specifically among minority males. Students who do face suspension and expulsion due to zero tolerance policies are at-risk of being caught in the “school-to-prison pipeline”.…

prison system are the mandatory minimums. Mandatory minimums are bad. Because mandatory minimums are the lowest sentence someone can get. For example if someone were to get caught with illegal drugs the mandatory minimum would be a 15 to 30 year sentence. However, the policies changed the ways schools dealt with student infractions and misbehavior. Schools criminalize behaviors such as: weapons, alcohol/drugs use, threatening behavior, fighting in school, tardiness, and disorderly conduct; therefore instead of having the issues addressed by the principal in his/her office, the individual is suspended, expelled, or referred to the criminal justice system regardless of the offense or mitigating circumstances (Heitzeg 2009). This drastically decreased the discretion of the schools officials. Instead the school administers promoted a tough on crime mentality, taking a strong and harsh stance on infractions: “In 2004, there were over 3.2 million school suspensions and over 106,000 expulsions; in some states, the number of suspensions exceeds 10 percent of the number of students enrolled” (Kim, Losen, and Hewitt 2010). Instead of giving students an education, which is highly valued in our society, the schools pushed them away from attaining it.…

Students who have been suspended may develop the belief that they are worth less than other students. They gain a reputation as troublemaking, disobedient kids who will never amount to anything. They develop low self-esteem and often become depressed or angry. But instead of trying to help them, the school system often punishes them, adding to the resentment they already feel. They also miss out on the benefits of participating in class and interacting with peers, which teaches essential communication skills.…
