It helps make their stories more interesting. It influences our minds to think of a culture, or people as one thing and that’s it. As Americans, we often see African American males on TV being portrayed as tough, cold criminals. We hear the word, “Criminal” and the first thing most of us will think of is an African American man. We stereotype them as bad people. Not all African Americans are malicious people. That’s like saying all Caucasians are sinless. We’re not. Media has a way of wrapping our minds to think this way by exposing these stories constantly. We may not even think about it, but it chooses the story that will immediately grab your attention. An author from Nigeria, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, personally experienced a stereotypical thought from her roommate. Her roommate believed that every person who lived in the continent of Africa was unbelievably poor, and dying from AIDS. Chimamanda dismissed this as a result of media affecting the lives of Americans with images of beautiful landscapes, and horrible living conditions. .”(Adichie, 2012, TED talks) Television and magazines are everywhere with single stories and depict things as only single thing.
