When the Wall Street stock market crashed in October 1929, the world economy was plunged into the Great Depression. By the winter of 1932, America was in the depths of the worst economic depression in its history. As well as food becoming extremely scarce, more than 13 million people were unemployed and between 1 and 2 million people travelled around the country desperately looking for work.

He uses the character of Crooks to represent racism and symbolize the marginalization of the black community occurring at the time in which the novel is set. Crooks is significant as he provides an insight into the reality of the American Dream. Crooks’ name suggests that there is something physically wrong with him. His disability (crooked back) is one of the many ways that he suffers on the ranch, however, we can see that in American society in the 1930’s, being black was synonymous of having a disability. Due to his race, he is segregated and deemed as inferior; he is made to feel lonesome and is isolated from the others. Additionally, we see Crooks predominantly in chapter four.
