Improved Essays
In the story Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, he shows us a woman who is not happy with her life or marriage. Elisa uses chrysanthemums as an escape from her unhappy marriage since she cannot find happiness from her husband. Elisa looks at her garden filled with chrysanthemums as her children that she always has wanted; by doing this Steinbeck shows femininity. In a women’s nature it is known for the mother to protect her kid and Elisa does this by not letting anything harm her chrysanthemums by protecting them with a wired fence. “ She spread the leaves and looked down among the close- growing stems. No aphids were there, no snow bugs or snails or cutworms. Her terrier fingers destroyed such pests before they could get started” Steinbeck

What inspires a person to write the way he or she does? Is there a relationship between a story’s text and the author? In John Steinbeck’s “The Chrysanthemums,” the main character, Elisa Allen, cherishes her chrysanthemums, yet her femininity is unnoticed. The flattery she receives from the tinker gives her hope; however, it is, specifically, false hope, in that the attention that she gains causes more frustration over how she, like other women of her time, is treated by men, including Henry, her husband. This is revealed when she notices “a dark speck” on the road (Steinbeck 102), as the impoverished tinker abandoned her flowers and only wanted money.…

John Steinbeck’s short story, “The Chrysanthemums,” establishes an explicitly ironic and dismal tone towards female empowerment in society through the contradictory characterization of Elisa and her duality as both a strong, independent woman, and a wife who is constantly being socially oppressed by the world around her. Steinbeck reinforces this idea through constant, selective detailing of the environment surrounding Elisa, and the inclusion of symbolic visual imagery throughout the text. Throughout “The Chrysanthemums,” Elisa’s characterization is developed in such a way that is all but feminine; she is constantly referred to as a “lean and strong” woman, with a “blocked and heavy” figure and robust frame. In addition, she is also often…

What we learn about our friends on a road trip may be very different from what we learn about them in their homes or at school. Characters in a story can also change when they move from one place to another. Authors use setting — the time and place of a story — as a device to reveal particular aspects of a character. In John Steinbeck's "The Chrysanthemums," the shift of the setting from the ranch to the road plays a crucial role in the development of the main character, Elisa. I will be writing about how the setting helps us understand Elisa more.…
