How Does Soundings Affect My Life

The sun was shining on a bright ninety degree summer day as I made the two hour trip to Castleton University. I remember watching the cars go by, seeing if any of them looked my age. If they seemed around my age, I instantly thought that they too were going to be at orientation. I recall sitting in Leavenworth Hall on this summer day, picking out the classes I would be taking my freshman year. What my FYS teacher told all of our class was that we needed a freshman Soundings. At the time, I had no idea what Soundings was or how much it would influence my life. All I knew at that time was that it was something I needed to graduate. Over the last couple of years, soundings has turned out to be more than just a class that is needed to graduate. My Soundings experience has influenced my personal and intellectual growth, my study in my major, and my future plans.
Soundings has had a profound impact on my personal and intellectual growth. I remember freshman year taking soundings and I hated the whole concept of it. I thought it was a waste of time and attending six Soundings events was something I was not looking forward to. My FYS teacher told me that although now we thought Soundings was a stupid requirement, we would not think that

The film, 7 Boxes was based in Paraguay. In a couple of months, I will be studying abroad in Costa Rica. During this film, I was sitting by another Castleton University student who has studied abroad in Costa Rica. At the end of the film, he told me the similarities between Costa Rica and Paraguay. He said how the streets of Paraguay and the streets of Costa Rica are very similar. These two countries both have merchants selling fruits and other foods along the streets along with the cleanliness of the streets being the same. He also told me how you have to be careful. In the movie, you saw people stealing from others on the streets. He said that this could happen while I am

I knew Red Lobster was a bad option. I wanted to go to Outback Steakhouse, but mom had her way, even on MY high school graduation. I was stuck, sitting in the booth, waitress staring at me for 15, 16, 17 seconds now. Sitting in my cap and gown, she asked again – “where are you going to college?” I’d prefer the Bloomin’ Onion to this any day of the week.…

A messy bedroom, Arctic Monkeys as background music, and an adolescent begrudgingly writing an essay for their twelfth grade English class is the current scene. This is the perspective of a senior; an absolutely glamorous time in life. It's an alarming thought that my high school career has brought me to this point as I search my mind for the correct words to advise you and my fingers tap away at my small keyboard. I'm supposed to give advice and guidance to the future graduates of our beloved Quincy High School, but there's little I can give that can be completely relatable to all. For example, I was raised by a single father, am a part-time cashier, and can barely figure out how the Pythagorean theorem will actually affect my adult life.…

I have always known that I wanted to serve in the justice system, but my interest in law school truly began in high school with experiences such as my involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters. As a Big Sister, I learned that there are many children in the world that need an advocate to give them a voice within the system. My interest in a legal career was further piqued during my attendance at Sunflower Girls State where I was able to attend a real trial with the District Attorney and participate in mock trials. Experiences such as these both inspired and encouraged me to set my goals towards law school.…

The first time, I enrolled in this class, I felt excited knowing this class would help on my grammar, so I can become a better writer. My first thought that cross my mind was this was going to be easy and it was. My last experienced with writing and English was okay because I mainly get a B or a C, but rarely I would get an A. I always been having trouble with grammars. My high school English teachers taught us about grammars and how to become a better writer. It was similar to what you had taught us in class because we always learned about grammar out of a book and we got tested after we been practice.…

A new journey in my life began on August 13th, 2014 as my school principal cut the red ribbon celebrating the opening of a brand new high school. Little did I know, it would become a journey of growth and unique experiences unlike any before it, further refining and adding to my inner sculpture of identity and talent. I was going to Liberty High School, therefore it was necessary that I adapt--quickly, yet strategically. Throughout my life, I had never imagined that my high school experience would reach and exceed my expectations in the way that it did. I had the unique opportunity most people don’t get in life: to be part of a grassroots movement in establishing a culture that would enrich future students with tradition and values for many years to come.…

In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Meeting once a week, the purpose of these groups was to discuss the Bible and life issues, but based on personal experience, these groups offered much more than a few life lectures.…

Ever since I was a child I wanted to help people and didn’t realize how, until I stepped foot in my 7th grade science class. The day still replays in my mind like it was yesterday. I was walking into a new school, with new people, and I felt like the last leaf stuck on the tree, waiting to fall in place where I belonged, but oddly enough, this one basic anatomy and physiology class made me feel welcomed. What made me feel welcomed wasn’t really the teacher or the students in there, but the environment of that particular branch of science. What was so amazing about that side of science was there was always more to learn and more importantly you were learning about yourself.…

I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. Catherine Lutz and Jane Collins have written about the various intersecting gazes found in photographs of exotic people and places, which create a certain impression of those people or places by the viewer. Wendy S. Hesford and Brenda Jo Brueggemann have written about the traveling gaze and the identification and difference involved in tourism. I will be using their previous work along with a Lonely Planet web page on Paraguayan tourism and an article by Toby Hill on violence, poverty and corruption in Paraguay, to compare the representation of Paraguay in the media today. I will also use information on Paraguay written by Elizabeth Purdy in the Encyclopedia of World Poverty to support my work. This essay will explore how Paraguay is currently…
