How Does Social Media Affect Our Society?

Technology has become such a big part of our culture as the years go on. We’ve been consumed by it and in many ways it affects our daily lives. From the alarm that wakes us up in the morning, to the reminders we have set for the day and most importantly how we connect with one another. I know as a teenager, the first thing I do when I wake up is check my phone. Sometimes after getting up I’ll sit in my bed for at least 20 minutes checking the posts I’ve missed while I slept. An abundance of adults can confess to the same actions. As a culture we are somewhat distracted by social media. Whether it has good or bad effects are the questions that need answers. Not every impact that social media or technology has on us is negative. According to a study conducted by Pew Internet Research, 66 percent of American adults use Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and etc. In the study it was found out that the main reason for using social media was to re-connect with friends and family (pewinternet.org). As far as who connects with their friends and family more, a study was also conducted saying that women tend to use social media for that purpose more than men do. While I majority of my family live in Maryland, I still have family that live in Jamaica. Sometimes I get on Facebook just to see what they’ve got going on in their lives and to see how they’re doing. When using social media, one doesn’t always have to directly talk to someone to stay connected. And I think that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There are times where because we haven’t talked to someone in a while, randomly popping up in their messages might be kind of awkward. Social media websites give one the option to provide what they choose to release to the public. Some people don’t take advantage or even realize that this is a choice and end up giving the world a lot of personal information. Although not always a reliable website, according to a Wikipedia page titled “Privacy Concerns with Social Networking Sites” there are several worries that come about using social media. The first one was identity theft. One could reveal information such as their social security number and once that’s gotten a hold of, an individual could do what they please with your name. Another concern that came up with social media privacy is stalking, as well as sexual predators. I think the issue of sexual predators mostly comes along with some of our younger social media users. When exposing confidential details about themselves to a stranger they never really know whom they’re talking too. One could possibly end up communicating with a sex offender whose desire is children. And those young users may potentially be in danger.
