It’s something we learn as we grow from past experiences. Adolescence has major role in creating an identity for one. How does social media affect this process? Memory development doesn’t start until a child is around four to seven. Those memories become clear by the age of ten. Past experiences help develop an identity, no one is simply born with crystalized memories. A child hasn’t have had enough experiences in their short life time to create beliefs and values for themselves, they might follow their parents footsteps until they become independent. Since memories aren’t correctly processed until the age of ten on average. During those years adolescents start to become independent and start to form their own beliefs, develop skills, and express themselves appropriately. Beliefs, skills, and goals in life can become an illusion. Social media role models like to twist their reality into something that isn’t achievable but these adolescents haven’t realised that yet. Thirty-nine percent of internet users feel the need to post things that will gather as much likes and comments possible even if the post is fake. Self Esteem isn’t consistant that what makes social media so harmful. A study from the University of Salford has reported out of 298 users, fifty percent of those users said that their low self-esteem was a result of social media. Self-verification has created a new route with the help of social media, it’s easy on social media to be understood as a social media page is the what’s on the surface of one 's mind a the time. You have an idea of how one is doing mentally just by looking at their social media page for example if you and your special someone one of the pair is most likely to post about it on social media or reference it in a post. Social media has become the playground for social competition to grow and eventually reign over the internet. 40 percent of active social media users report the feeling of having to improve their image on social media. That is the result of the social competition that happens on social media and all over the internet. As a species we are conditioned to improve ourselves by comparing ourselves to those that are successful by whatever we deem to be the end goal to self-fulfillment. Social media is place where it is easy to fabricate a fantasy based-world for yourself without others knowing. It’s results in an abstract sense of reality that affects everyone
