How Does Shakespeare Present The Theme Of Death In Hamlet

Improved Essays
Death is the action or fact of dying or being killed; the end of the life of a person. In the play of Hamlet, written by Shakespeare, the idea of death is very prevalent. Shakespeare is quite clearly trying to make a point or send a message to the audience or readers about the theme of death. This theme is particularly clear in the fifth and final act of the play Hamlet. In the fifth act alone, Hamlet, Claudius, and Gertrude all with be killed and thus Shakespeare shows the theme of death by killing off three of the main characters in the play. The idea of death is quite clear throughout the entire play, but it’s very prevalent in the final act and Mr. McGee has specifically asked us to write about the fifth act. Personally, I believe the theme of …show more content…
“Drink off this potion. Is thy union here? Follow my mother.” (Page 304, Lines 336-337, Act 5: Scene 2) Personally, this quote is one of the stronger ones in the entire play of Hamlet. It shows the audience and readers that Hamlet is so consumed in his revenge for his father’s death that he isn’t even remotely bothered by the fact that his mother just died in front of his own eyes. He has let the idea of killing Claudius completely obsess him throughout the entire play, and now the one person who he was trying to protect has died and he has absolutely no emotion towards it whatsoever. By this point in the play, you can clearly tell that Hamlet has gone completely mad and no longer has any sense of what is right and what is wrong. He allowed Claudius to ultimately murder his own mother on accident just so he would be able to murder Claudius. He easily could’ve stopped his mother from drinking the poison, but then he wouldn’t have been able to reveal the fact that Claudius is a murderer. If getting revenge by murdering someone is more important that your own mother’s life, the theme of death is very

One of the best quotes from the play that pretty much sums up death is “Thou know'st 'tis common; all that lives must die, Passing through nature to eternity. ”(Act 1 Scene 2). When this is said it really leaves a resounding message that no one person or living thing is safe from death, and it also gives a little bit of foreshadowing to the death that is to come in the story.…

This results from being so “emotionally corrupted” (ReverieMarie 2) with the thought of killing Claudius, that many innocent people like Polonius, Ophelia, Laertes, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern and the Queen die within the path of his revenge. In Scene 4 of Act 3, Hamlet stabs Polonius thinking it was Claudius. ReverieMarie explains that “Hamlet does not apologize or express horror at his own lack of sound judgment, indicating both moral and physical corruption. Rather, Hamlet uses this as an opportunity to criticize his mother: “A bloody deed- almost as bad, good mother, as kill a king and marry with his brother”. (3.4.34-35)…

Hamlet finds avenging his father’s death so difficult because he never has the right time to do it. Throughout most of the play Hamlet is being watched by someone for Claudius, whether it is his friends, Ophelia, or his family. To murder someone you would typically want to be alone, there are other times when Hamlet is busy twisting Polonius to being convinced he’s gone mad. At the end on act III, Hamlet verbally attacks his mother, though he is mostly right about all of the things he says to his mother. He doesn’t take action as soon as he is convinced Claudius is guilty because he believes there are more people around that are guilty than it may seem, and that he is not sure who he could trust in his vicinity.…

Leonard Nimoy, or Mr. Spock from the famous Star Trek television series, once stated “I think it’s my adventure, my trip, my journey, and I guess my attitude is, let the chips fall where they may”. Prince Hamlet had the same attitude towards his life, and death, at the climax of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. His ever-changing thoughts and views on death throughout the play accumulate to impact his final actions before death. It is common across many Shakespearean tragedies for at least one character to die; in Hamlet, five characters are murdered. These five (King Hamlet, Hamlet Jr., Laertes, Gertrude, and Claudius) all die as a result of being poisoned by Claudius, directly or transitively. The repeated use of poison across Shakespeare's plays is not a coincidence, and when Shakespeare uses poison in Hamlet, he sets up a strong association of poison to the corruption in man. More specifically, Shakespeare uses the poison as a symbol for the corruption of man, by associating it with murder, the need for retribution, and government.…

Hamlet’s loneliness, feelings of anger, and sorrow would certainly compel him to avenge his father’s death by killing Claudius. “A villain kills my father, and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven.” (III.3.77) Hamlet doesn’t immediately avenge his father’s death, he goes through a phase where he contemplates and delays when he should commit the act of killing…
