Love is a subject that is widely known. Love plays a prominent role in the play, Much Ado About Nothing, written by the famous William Shakespeare. A question asked through the entire play is, are Hero and Claudio, two of the main lovebirds, really in love? Hero and Claudio are not in love, but are infatuated with each other because they have only known each other for a short time, do not care for each other deeply, and are harsh and quick with emotions regarding each other. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, infatuation is a "strong but not usually lasting feelings of love or attraction," while love is "a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties." That being said, you can clearly see that Hero and Claudio do not love each other. In act 1, scene i of MAAN, Claudio and Hero see each other for the first time. Afterwards, Claudio pulls Benedick aside and begins to ask and tell him about Hero, saying "in mine eye she is the sweetest lady that ever I looked on," (1, i, 17). He continues, later saying,"That I love her, I feel," (1, i, 19). Love comes out "of personal ties or kinship," and they don't even know each other, so love is not a possibility for them. When you love someone, you care about them endlessly, and you would do anything to keep them safe. When Hero supposedly “died”, Leonato comes to tell him what has happened, and what Claudio can do to repay him for his daughters death. He says, “... and you could not be my son-in-law. Be my nephew. My brother hath a daughter… give her the right you should have given her cousin.” Claudio responds to this by saying, “I do embrace your offer and dispose for henceforth of poor Claudio.” (5, i, 175).
