Sexism; behaviour, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on gender. Sexism is a problem in all of the society but it can cause major distress among the younger generations.
Gender stereotypes are generalizations about the roles of each gender, they are simply inaccurate overviews of the male and female qualities. Stereotypes such as “men’s jobs are not suitable for women” or vice versa, discourages someone from doing what they want and following their dreams and goals. Since each person has individual desires, thoughts, and feelings, regardless of their gender, these stereotypes are incredibly simplistic and do not at all describe the qualities of every person of each gender. 17% of women 15 years or older in Australia have been victims of sexual assault by someone who wasn’t their partner, that’s roughly 39,321 people just in 2014, this doesn’t include the men. I recently saw a news headline about model Heidi Klum that focused on that fact that part of her breast was showing in a swimsuit instead of the fact that she had just saved two lives from drowning, the media went crazy over a breast rather than the fact she saved two lives, what would happen if a man saved those lives? What would the headline be? Media sexualises the female body all the time to sell produces and this often goes un-noticed. It’s often seen as okay to have a sexual view of a women on television, music videos, video games as well as social media, but it’s also seen as okay for people to treat these women as if they are not people and comment about their worth depending on how much or how little they are wearing. People learn more from media than any other source of information, media is all around us all the time. Children’s lives now are lived on phones and this source is giving off sexist views. Girls learn what a man wants, what they should wear, and how to act and that their value is their looks and not intelligence. While boys are so often seeing violence, ill treatment towards women and viewing them as objects, as well as not being able to let out their feelings or to be manly. This …show more content…
At a young age we are told to respect people, respect your grandparents they have done a lot for you, respect your teachers and school environment it helps you learn, respect your parents they gave you so much, respect people’s opinions they have rights to them. Society still doesn’t respect people rights to dress however they want without sexist comments, to participate in any sport or activity no matter gender and to pursue any job career or goal despite gender. People have the right to be respected no matter gender and we shouldn’t be divided because of it either. Gender respect is an idea that all people deserve treated with social and physical respect regardless of gender and they should be able to live their lives without harassment, bullying or abuse based on stereotypes of traditional gender
