This article relates to my research question because it explains three ways screen media can cause obesity. This informs my understanding on how advertisements, distracted eating and sedentary behavior cause obesity. Bickham et al and Rosen et al offer a similar perspective when they say that poor eating habits and sedentary behavior link social media and obesity.

Obese Americans are depicted as unintelligent and undisciplined. Often times over weight individuals aren’t included on television programs and the seldom times they are they are shown engaging in stereotypical eating. News media contributes to weight bias through highlighting individual causes to obesity without including the social or genetic factors. Similarly, reality weight loss programs such as Nutrisystem and Weight Watchers can create individual self blame. “Victims of weight-based prejudice are at higher risk for mental health comorbidities, including depression, body dissatisfaction, loneliness, anxiety, and low self-esteem” (Chou et al). Social media such as YouTube has cyberbullying towards overweight peers.
