The exposer to unusual and new circumstances helped Santiago mature as he’s able to adapt and learn from each experience. Once he left his home country of Spain and traveled to Africa, he was immediately immersed in a new nation with diverse beliefs, cultures, and languages which were very different from where he grew up. After spending a year in Africa, Santiago familiarised himself with their way of life and subsequently learned their native language as the narrator stated, “Il etait fier de lui. Il avait appris des chose importantes; comme… le language sans parole, et les signes” (Narateur, 77).
