Initially, Saki uses direct characterization to make Vera seem real. Direct characterization states what a characterization states what a character is like [ their personality]. A example of this is, in the story, “The Open Window” it states, “.... said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen.” This is saying that she is all about herself. Also with with the quote above you can tell that Vera is talkative, curious, teenager who likes to get into people’s business. Indirect characterization shows what a character does, is like, looks, and acts. The author uses indirect in the story “The Open Window” it says, “you will bury yourself down there and not speak to a living soul and your nerves will be worse than ever.” What this means is that he won’t speak to anyone, [ these are Mr. Nuttel’s actions]. From the quote you can tell that Mr.Nuttel is a shy person who is paranoid, so he is being portrayed as a crazy, weird, anxious person. With indirect characterization it brings the characters to life because you can picture
