Does Rhinoceros hornbill’s casque affect its viability?
Introduction
The rainforests and tropics near Thailand are home to many species including the Rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros Rhinoceros) (DWA, n.d.). In many tourists’ eyes, one cannot help but be attracted to the unusual horn like bone sticking out of the top of the rhinoceros hornbill’s head. That spectacular horn like bone on top of its head is called a casque (DWA, n.d.). Alexander et al. (1994) discovered that the hollowness of the casque helps with its resonance frequency, thus helping the rhinoceros in various ways, such as bird calls and producing loud sounds to scare off other rhinoceros hornbills from their territory. Besides that, not much is really known about the casque. Because of this lack of information regarding the casque in the scientific community, I would like to investigate more about whether or not the casque is vital to the rhinoceros hornbill’s life.

One possible conclusion of why this might be the case is that the size of casque will affect the casque’s ability to resonate profoundly, which helps the rhinoceros hornbill in communications, thus it may help warn enemies and warn others off of their territories from a distance so they don’t get invade by other hornbills (Alexander et al.,1994). Furthermore, Policht et al. (2009) states that with a larger casque, the rhinoceros hornbills can produce louder calls, and as a result, it may be able to show that it’s more healthy than ones with softer calls, therefore attracting more females to mate and reproduce, thereby resulting in more offsprings being produced. Moreover, with a louder call, it can warn its family when it sees a predator, so they can hide and increasing their chance of

4.0Chapter four Discussion: 4.1 Point Counts By restraining the recording of species to a 10- 50m fixed radius when in dense forest at kamwala 1 forest, it allows the subtraction the certain bias, such as, the highly vocal forest species; White bellied Go Away bird and Tropical Bulbul, as well as those species which ‘generally’ occur above the canopy (for example; forest raptors). The most widespread species to occur across all the count areas (map 1) were Common Bulbul, Orange ground thrush and JoyfulGreenbul as well Red bellied paradise flycatcher, but orange ground thrush havens highly distributed in kamwala forest reserve. Although this is ecologically indicative of Rüppell's Robin-Chat, a forest edge species, it is unusual for Dusky Flycatcher which is usually found throughout forest stratum where it occurs 4 .2Birds abundance and diversity…

Discussion The threespine sticklebacks’ (Gasterosteus aculeatus) ability in evolving help them achieve the greatest amount of fitness and success for the future year. The group used the variable predation and calcium concentration to understand the stickleback better. Before measuring the group made a primary and secondary hypothesis. The primary hypothesis concluded that rainbow trout predation acts as selective source on the spine size of three spine stickleback because the different sizes of spines will indicate the difficulty of eating that particular stickleback. The secondary hypothesis concluded that the spine size in threespine stickleback is affected by the calcium limitation in the environment because the bones require calcium to grow and strengthen. While the group was measuring, they saw that the predation for the tout was longer than 8’ which helped measuring the calcium concentration because the calcium forms the bones in organisms.…

I will be talking about dolphins inside the Chesapeake Bay estuary. The largest dolphins reach a length of about 13 feet , but most species are 7 to 10 feet long. Dolphins have smooth, rubbery skin and they normally have some mixture of black, white, and gray. They have two flippers,on their sides, as well as a triangular fin on the back. Dolphin calves are born in the water after a period of one year for about 18 months.…

Many of the orcas have chewed the metal bars of their tanks due to stress. This wears down their teeth, which will only worsen. The dental pulp, the living tissue of their teeth, is exposed and can attract germs, which may lead to heart problems, pneumonia, sepsis, and death. Also, Dr. Ginneken says that less than 1% of orcas in the wild have collapsed dorsal fins, but in captivity, all male orcas have collapsed dorsal fins, due to stress and the lack of space. Collapsed dorsal fins are caused by the orca slowly ‘circle-swimming’, instead of straight and fast like they would in the wild.…

Contrast and Comparison between Frog and Songbird Mating Calls By the law of the nature, most creatures seek to survive and reproduce. In other words, they reproduce to survive or to keep their species on living. In this research paper, I would compare and contrast the advertisement calls for mating between frogs and songbirds and talk about how the production of mating calls is related to Tinbergen’s four questions. Both anurans and passerines have calls.…

    Essay On Morphyrna

In this article, the author, Mauro Jose Cavalcanti discusses how he conducted a thorough analysis of all the species within Sphyrna by utilizing “matrix representation with parsimony” to produce a phylogenetic supertree. In order to produce an accurate supertree, he applied morphological data regarding the evolution of the cephalofoil and he examined the likely adaptive implication of the unique hammerhead morphology. Cavalcanti discussed that the cephalofoil allows better maneuverability in the water by providing hydrodynamic lift, similar to the aerodynamic lift of an airplane cruising through the troposphere. Another hypothesis of the significance of the cephalofoil is that it potentially enhances the sensory performance of the shark by placing the spacing sensory structures at the lateral aspect of the head. The author suggested that understanding the evolution of the cephalofoil would require using morphological and molecular data in a comparative approach to generate an extensive phylogenetic analysis of Sphyrna, and ultimately a supertree.…

Once these crocs were called Butcher Crocodiles but now referred as Carnufex Carolinensis. These crocodiles ancestor likely walked on their hind legs, preying on armored reptiles and early mammal in it’s ecosystem. It shares some qualities with dinosaurs such as it shared some skeletal features with the big-headed dinosaur like reptiles called rauisuchids, showing that this croc may share more traits than being cold blooded.…

The researchers hypothesized that chemoreception is a salient aspect for the Iguanas in their daily lives to detect chemical cues from potential predators that are either hidden or out of site. Furthermore, they were interested in testing whether the iguanas were able to distinguish the chemical cues of the two, sympatric snake species as well as other pungent chemicals. The iguanas were housed individually in clear polycarbonate cages lined with sand and were exposed to four disparate chemical stimuli: Clean control, spraying distilled water on the sand in the test cage; Pungent control, spraying 1:5 dilution of Old Spice cologne; snake control, a live…

    Dolphin Whistles

Solitary dolphins use identity whistles more frequently than wild dolphins who are more likely to use shared whistles. Signature whistle is a vital part of the development of sea animals, because they not only utilize those signals as their individual identity, they also interchange signature communication before they interact with one another. Dolphins live deep in the sea in a domain with no reference point, so they have to remain together as a group, not to dismiss sight of each other since they migrate a lot. Furthermore, nonsignature whistles are also parts of dolphin communications nevertheless, this communicative practice is less reliable for individuals to represent its meaning, since tone or pitches aren’t individualized like signatures whistles, so they are less appropriate for studying how animals identity each…
