How Does Reverend Hale Affect The Crucible

Reverend Hale, a specialist in witchcraft, and a very eager eyed intellectual, comes to Salem, to get to the bottom of the chaos occurring in this small town of Puritan people. He is a man that firmly believes in the devil and believes that there is a society of spirits beyond our ken. During Hale’s time in Salem, he is able to really discover the truth behind every action that ends up occurring, and why things happen the way they do. Reverend Hale plays a purpose in Arthur Miller’s play, because he represents the audience and how we are slowly seeing the true irony behind the events occurring and how ridiculously false accusations can lead to someone’s death. He begins to see the truth of Proctor and how these trials are all a big mistake to foolish drama caused by Abigail Williams. He tries to help the accused by siding against the girls and beginning to defend the accused. He witnesses the struggle of the accused and how their innocence is almost impossible to show when all the girls stick together in their testimonies to false accusations of witchcraft. Once proctor comes forward about the affair with Abby, hale becomes certain that proctor would only confess such a sin if it were true, and when abby denies it; Hale is convinced that Abby has been lying the whole time out of mere spite against Elizabeth, Proctor’s wife. Reverend Hale then goes as far as coming to Elizabeth’s defense when he exclaims, “ Excellency this is a natural lie to tell; I beg of you, stop now before another is condemned! I may shut my conscience to it no more— private vengeance is working through this testimony! From the beginning this man has struck me true. By my oath to heaven, I believe him now, and pray you call back his wife.” John is then taken into Jail when Mr.Giles decides that since Elizabeth was untruthful, she must have been under the devil in which case is now Proctor.
