How Does Poverty Affect Children

More than 30 per cent of children in developing countries live on less than US $1 every day. Every 3.6 seconds one person dies of starvation. And, this person is usually a child under 5. So we can conclude that poverty is something that affects children the most. Poverty is an issue that creates an environment which destroys a child’s mental, physical and emotional development. It’s a matter to be noted that in countries there are distinctions between the city and the rural villages. Hence, it is required for the mothers to walk long distances in order to get water for their family, as they do not have an adequate supply of water in their side of town. For this they have to leave their children all alone at home for hours. This affects the child’s development in many ways, and most importantly those children who accompany their mothers to fetch waters are the ones who suffer the most. They do not have time to go to school; hence they are the ones who suffer from lack of knowledge and skills. Poverty is something that causes diseases to spread as well. HIV/AIDS is one disease that has risen ever since the rate of poverty has increased. Along with this, malnutrition is another thing that poverty increases. Without money, there is no food. In 2010, an estimated 21% of people in the developing world lived at or below $1.25 a day – down from 43% in 1990 and 52% in 1981. However, it can be clearly seen that there are still many people suffering from lack of food, water, and health facilities.
