When I was in grade school, I went to a low poverty campus. Compared to schools in today’s society, I did not have access to technology such as computers, smartboards, tablets or Elmo’s. For any research that was done in the classroom we were to use books in the library; that was our “google”. According to “Teaching with Poverty in Mind” by Eric Jensen, there are six different kinds of poverty that can affect a student in school. Situational poverty is caused by sudden crisis or loss. Generational poverty occurs when two generations are born into poverty. Absolute poverty are families who live day-to-day survival; which you do not see in the United States. I know when I become an educator there are some strategies that I will incorporate in my classroom to make sure my students are not only treated fairly, but their education is not at stake. Like I have mention previously, many of my classmates were not able to attend field trips because of money issues. I know when I am an educator, I try to raise money so that all my students are able to attend. Students who live in poverty will have low self-esteem. I plan to make sure to listen to my students and to build a strong relationship in order to support them in any way I can. Another strategy that I will use in my classroom is to make sure to expose them to the outside world. It is unfortunate that students are brought into this world and have to live a life where life is tough. Life is a roller coaster with many ups and downs. I think it is important for educators to understand that students who are living in poverty to be mindful of what they might be going through, but do not treat them any less than other students. As an educator, it is our duty to accommodate for our students and to make sure that their education is our number one priority. It is our job to be there for them and help support the families. I believe poverty is only a state of mind. As long you have friends, family, and working towards an education; nothing else
