Poe establishes an atmosphere of fear, suspense, horror in “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” He does this by the words he chooses to set up a certain mood and tone that these stories need to be effective.
To begin with, the mood in “The Cask of Amontillado” form creepy, dark and suspenseful through settings, word choices, and irony. This story took place at underground catacomb which already creates the dark atmosphere. Poe utilizes strong description to demonstrates the dark catacombs. The text says “a deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux rather to glow than flame” (Poe).
