How Does Poe Create Suspense In The Tell Tale Heart

When one thinks of the word scary or suspenseful, they probably think of sitting up in their seats during a scary movie. Maybe one would think of their worst nightmare. By reading this paper one will discover that Edgar Allen Poe, author of The Tell Tale Heart thinks of something stranger and much darker when thinking of something scary or suspenseful. Edgar Allen Poe did not have an easy life. He lived a life of let down and doubt; having both his parents die when he was young. When reading this paper one will realize just how brutal Poe can be with his writing. Poe incorporates fear and dread into The Tell Tale Heart. He does this by using characters, suspense, and plenty of violence.

One could read the story and make their own predictions. The words in the beginning can make one predict what is about to happen. The events that happen in the story foreshadow what is going to happen. Such as when he says “I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye for ever”(Poe 303). As one reads the story the narrator hints at certain events. The reader could get extremely paranoid reading this story because of the narrators details in the story. The narrator explains exactly how he kills the old man; he explains how perfectly the murder was done. The details read in the story also foreshadow what is about to happen. The narrator explains how the old man gets nervous and shoots out of bed. Reading the story one could practically know what is going to happen. “When he had turned in the bed. His fears had ever since growing upon him”(Poe 304). The old man is obviously nervous when he wakes up, but does not know anything. The author also used repetition in many things to add suspense to the story. “Yes he was stone, stone dead”(Poe 304). In the reading certain words are repeated to play an extreme roll into foreshadowing. Even the objects in the story are repeated, such as the old mans heartbeat.
