“When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty,”(Che Guevara). The First Amendment of the constitution guarantees Americans the right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly. In a free society people are able to exercise their freedom to live according to whichever manner they choose. The people of America must keep a close eye on government to ensure our freedoms are not infringed on, and if they are peaceful protest is necessary to maintain and positively impact the free society. Peaceful resistance is right and positively impacting when government is unjust. Henry David Thoreau described in Civil Disobedience that although a person is not obligated to spend their life devoted to fighting and resisting all evils that society

Today the majority of protest movements to not remain peaceful or lawful. The black lives matter movement quickly turned to rioting in the streets of major cities. This form of protest is not positively impacting on society. Destroying buildings vehicles and other items of value is not beneficial to society. The majority of the protests must at that point be put down through force. Also the recent protests of Hillary supporters protesting Trump was unlawful. Protesters were being paid to obstruct major highways and city streets. This negatively impacts society, and the reputation of America as a democratic nation. By obstructing traffic flow society is negatively impacted when people are unable to commute to work and other transportations of goods and services hurts the economy and society. These protests were found as unlawful and had to be put down through force of police and other tools. America also has a reputation as a democratic nation. In 1800 the first transition of power between two opposing parties occurred, and America gained an admirable reputation for being able to do so, however this reputation is hurt when in the current society the opposing party is unable to peacefully give up its power to its opposing
