In the book it says, “Four legs good, two legs better” (Orwell 133). Napoleon stays in charge by having his sheep bleating the slogan. The animals constantly having to hear the slogan will only make them start to believe it. It also says, “ Snowball has done this thing! In sheer malignity, thinking to set back our plans and avenge himself… this traitor has crept under cover of the night and destroyed our work of nearly a year” (Orwell 70). Napoleon uses Snowball as a scapegoat so he has someone to blame for the windmill and make the animals hate Snowball. That only encourages them to build a better unbreakable windmill. Napoleon stays in charge by using bandwagon. Because Boxer, the dogs, and Squealer follow Napoleon peacefully, the other animals don’t have a reason to oppose what Napoleon says or does. Napoleon uses Squealer as his manipulation man because any time something goes wrong or he just needs the animals to believe something he has Squealer to convince the animals of it. In the book it says, “Comrades, I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napoleon has made in taking this extra labour upon himself. Do not imagine, comrades, that leadership is a pleasure...No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal” (Orwell 55). In the book it says, “...the dogs sitting round Napoleon let out deep, menacing growls, and the pigs fell silent and sat down again” (Orwell 52). Napoleon stays in charge by using the dogs to threaten the other animals and make them fearful to say or do anything, or oppose Napoleon. Napoleon also stays in charge by intimidating the animals. In the book it says, “When they had finished their confessions, the dogs promptly tore their throats out…”(Orwell 84). Napoleon intimidates the animals by using the immense blood curdling dogs to put terror into them, and if the animals tried to contradict Napoleon they would savagely executed. Not only did he stay in charge because he could force them into confessing, but he could petrify them to the point where they would falsely confess because they were so afraid to not listen. They were so afraid if they didn’t they would be killed. They were still murdered in the end. In the book Squealer says, “Loyalty and obedience are more important..One false step, and our enemies would be upon us. Surely, comrades, you do not want Jones back” (Orwell 56). Napoleon stayed in charge because he could always use Jones as a threat to put the animals into a frenzy alarm and immediately get them to listen, not ask questions, and follow him. He stayed in charge also because using Jones as a
