In the book 1984 by George Orwell, all characters are affected adversely by their environment. The person who is affected the most is the protagonist, Winston. Winston lives in a dystopian society in which the buildings are crumbling left and right and the people have their wills controlled by the totalitarian government. This occurred because of a war that happened before Winston was born. Winston continues to take the orders of the government, though he internally disagrees. This causes him to create a journal in which he writes everyday, breaking the law. This results in him sleeping with another person, and in return, being tortured for it.
