Ever since Okonkwo was little he has always hated his lethargic, effeminate, and sluggish father. So, from an early age he knew he did not want to be anything like his father and did everything feasible to not be like him. Unlike a lot of children Okonkwo did not inherit all of his fortune he worked really hard for it, because his father did not have anything for him to inherit. Okonkwo also earned very high social status and was known by the majority of everyone in the clan. Until he accidently kills a clan member and gets exiled to his motherland for seven years. When his exile is over and he returns home from his mother land his social status has gone down, and no one really remembers who he is or really cares. In the seven years he was gone white missionaries had come to Umoufia, and had started converting members of the clan and establishing hospitals, schools, and even started changing the government. Okonkwo has always been big about keeping his religion and not upsetting the ancestors, so
