Teiresias explains to him that it is best if Oedipus does not know the truth of what Teiresias already knows. Oedipus insists on knowing the truth. Teiresias tells Oedipus that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Oedipus is skeptical and accuses Teiresias of working with Creon. Specifically, partway in the play, Teiresias states to Oedipus, “It is but sorrow to be wise/When wisdom profits not./All this I knew,/Yet missed the meaning.” (Sophocles 69). Through this example, it shows that Oedipus wants to know the truth despite of its potential horrifying outcome. My personal reaction is a combination of curiosity and fear. Oedipus and I share the same factor, curiosity; he desperately wants to know the truth about himself as I often desperately want to know what the result of my test is after I would have just written it. Even shortly after I write a test, I almost immediately ask the teacher which answer is correct to a certain question. Simultaneously, I fear what the result may be for the reason that I might not get the question right. As in society, when an enormous controversial situation is at hand such as an election, to be curious and to fear which candidate would become the next prime minister or the next premier could be a genuine possibility for any individual.
