How Does Ocean Pollution Affect Marine Life

Improved Essays
Therefore, without coral reefs there will be no life cycle in the ocean (Environment 911, 2011). According to Marine Animals, more than 100,000 sea animals die every year due to ocean pollution, one cause is ingesting plastic. As a result of this, the animal will feel full because the nondigestible plastic will remain in the animal’s stomach taking up space for the animal’s real food source, this can cause malnutrition, dehydration, and starvation (Save Our Shores). In addition, if the plastic object is too big, the animal will choke or suffocate (Ibid). For instance, many sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish; sadly 86% of sea turtles are affected by ocean pollution (Ibid). Although, it’s not just sea turtles being affected, in …show more content…
Due to the poisonous chemicals in the oil, innocent animals can face severe consequences of human actions. One reason is that when the oil shields a baby animal’s scent, the parents cannot find and feed their child, leaving the baby animal dying of starvation (Conserve Energy Future, 2016). If not starvation, the animal can also die due to hypothermia from the harsh elements of the oil, making it hard for the animal to repel water, maintain regular body temperatures and insulate from cold water (NOAA, 2014). There has also been many cases of the oil turning a sea animal blind because of constant encounters with the toxic oil (Conserve Energy Future, 2016). Many sea animals have gone through these awful experiences, including dolphins, sea otters, a variety of birds and fish (Ibid). In addition to fish, oil can clog the gills of the fish, blocking respiration (Environment 911). According to the National Ocean Service, written in 2016, states, “When exposed to oil, adult fish may experience reduced growth, enlarged livers, changes in heart and respiration rates, fin erosion, and reproduction impairment. Oil also adversely affects eggs and larval survival.” This shows how agonizing oil impacts marine …show more content…
Specifically in the United States, all U.S. territories except the Virgin Islands use pesticides, which rain will eventually wash those pesticides into the ocean (EPA, 2017). For instance, in Hawaii, people use pesticides to make the island look nice, but evaporation and rain can cause the pesticides to enter the ocean. Along with mercury, as stated in “Fish In Your Diet – Not Health Food Anymore: Mercury in Fish.” by Bluevoice.org, “Fish such as tuna, swordfish, Chilean sea bass, Alaskan halibut, tilefish and King mackerel have been shown to have extremely high levels of mercury. Wild caught salmon, sardines, cod, tilapia, sole, shrimp, and herring have lower levels of mercury.” In fact, large fish such as tuna, have 10 million times as much mercury in them as the water surrounding them. Given the information above, it shows what fish contain large and small amounts of mercury in them, all of which people eat. When people ingest a low amount of mercury, they can encounter memory loss, hair loss, fatigue, depression, difficulty concentrating, blurred vision, tremors and headaches (Bluevoice.org). For children, effects of ingesting mercury include: interference with they way a child thinks, learns, and problem solving, along with affecting spinal cords and nerve cells in the brain in children and unborn babies (NC DPH,

The Coal Oil Point along the California coast releases and estimated 2,000 to 3,000 gallons of oil into the Oceans each day, according to livescience.com. The BP Deepwater Horizon catastrophe in 2010 spilled 205.8 million gallons of oil and 225,000 tons of methane into the Gulf of Mexico, proven by biologicaldiversity.org. An oil spill is the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially marine areas, due to human activity, and is a form of pollution. Since so much oil is being released into the ocean, should we really risk clean water to oil? Bernie Sanders once said “We all remember the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst oil spill in U.S. history.…

Imagine a world where instead of cool, crisp rivers, there were hazardous, burnt coffee colored bodies of water. The air we breathe and the water we drink are considered very important to every living organism in the world; unfortunately, humans using more and more of the earth’s resources, which results in the deterioration of them. Water resources are necessary for human survival, but our constant pollution of them will result in its end. The only solution is for change; America must cut back on the constant pollution of its waterways. In the novel Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, a similar issue to America’s modern issue is Frank’s pollution of Ice Nine into their water supply.…

Many chemicals are safe to handle but negatively impact the environment in the long run. Other chemicals such as arsenic are toxic even in the smallest amounts. Mercury is a natural element that occurs throughout our environment and solar system. It has unique properties (i.e liquid metal at room temperature) and can be found in very small concentrations in many rocks and is the main component of the mineral cinnabar. Natural background levels can be detected in soils, living organisms, air, and water around the world.…

In the article “Why plastic Is a problem for Sea Turtles and the Ocean,” states that in the ocean, there is on the average “4 to 12 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year” and it is continuing to rise yearly. Because of all the trash, such animals are dying and going extinct. One of the many animals that are dying from the trash in the ocean is the sea turtle. They get wrapped up in plastic from the rings that hold pop cans together. In one instance that I saw from the same article I read ..”when a sea turtle is hungry little pieces of plastic and balloons look like food to them.”…

Oil in or on the water is extremely hurtful to wildlife. For example, if an animal lands in an area with oil it may try to clean itself in the toxic petroleum. Doing this can cause an animal to ingest the oil and damage internal organs and the reproductive system. Even if the oil does not kill the animal instantly it can cause long term damage and result in deformed offspring. Immediate impacts of oil are it could get coated into birds' feathers such as cranes or seagulls which causes them to lose their buoyancy and their ability to regulate body temperature, mammals could ingest the oil which can cause internal bleeding and ulcers, and it covers sea turtles' shells easily.…

The recent protests in North Dakota has turned the world’s attention to the Standing Rock Sioux Nation reserve, where a section of the Dakota Access Pipeline will be built if approved. Native Americans argue that the proposed pipeline will damage their vital water sources and affect the whole reserve, making their water undrinkable and harming their health. Crude oil pipelines, usually buried underground, can easily contaminate water (“How Can You Identify Pipeline.”), which in turn toxifies the water sources communities rely on for consumption and daily life (Harris, Robbie). Water is the liquid of life, and they should be prioritized; however, unfortunately, oil remains crucial for a vast range of industries and both local and global economies,…

For marine organisms plastic debris impacts “at least 267 species worldwide, including 86% of all sea turtle species, 44% of all seabird species and 43% of all marine mammal species. These impacts include fatalities as a result of ingestion, starvation, suffocation, infection, drowning and entanglement” (Laist, 1997). Fish, a huge source of nutrients and economic revenue for countries all over the world, have begun ingesting plastic fragments and debris in increasing amounts. One study revealed that out of 672 fish that were caught in the North Pacific Gyre 35% had ingested plastic pieces (Clean Water Action). Another study that focused on the ingestion and transfer of microplastics in the planktonic food web has shown that the organisms that make up the base of the food web, such as zooplankton are also ingesting plastics (Setala, 2013).…

Water pollution from chemical residues such as mercury, selenium, DDT, and various others can make seafood unsafe to eat as the chemical contaminants make their way into the smaller fishes and then concentrate and accumulate to higher levels as they get consumed by bigger fishes, a process known as biomagnification. Long term exposure to these chemical contaminants can lead to serious diseases such as neurological damage, birth defects, and cancer. However, chemical hazards have to be present in high toxic concentrations to pose a threat to human health. Thus, control measures and regulations to minimize contamination of aquatic environments have to be strictly imposed and implemented. (Huss 2004)…

Oil spills, such as the devastating Deepwater Horizon oil spill, can dump millions of gallons of crude oil into the ocean causing long term damage. The oil spreads out over the surface of the water, creating a deadly coating. The coating of oil kills off the aquatic life and pollutes the beaches when washed on shore. Seagulls, pelicans and other aquatic birds that spend a lot of time in water are affected the most. When oil sticks to the bird’s feathers, the oil causes the feathers to separate making it less water proof and exposing the bird’s sensitive skin to the environment.…
