These presentations usually had audiences of about 200 or more people in which I would guide them in English and/or Spanish on how to prevent and manage diabetes. The most influential workshops I have given was to seniors in the United Senior Citizens Center in Brooklyn, NY. The workshops included topics such as healthy eating, depression and diabetes, and diabetic nephropathy in which I was broadcasted to over 150 seniors. Not only did I learn to publicly speak in English and Spanish, but I also learned to organize and meet deadlines. For example, in preparation for “Step Out Walk,” a nationally held event for the ADA, I coordinated with partners of the ADA to ensure volunteer members were available, funding was provided, and proper stock of materials were present throughout the event. Through my experiences, I have gained an ability to publicly speak organize large social events, as well as work in a team environment. Even though I have overcome great adversity in my life, I still lack clinical experience in which I hope to gain through my fieldwork at St. John’s Hospital in Yonkers, New York this semester and through this dietetic internship.
My short-term goals are to continue my education by obtaining my Master’s degree in the field of nutrition while working to gain clinical experience. I plan to pass the RD exam and use these goals …show more content…
I was utterly impressed by the various rotations offered through the program, specifically the two weeks at Boston’s Children Hospital to help prepare for my future as a pediatric dietitian. I was also fascinated to see the one-week business plan as a part of the rotations and look forward to developing a plan with fellow peers. Ideally, I would like to spend the two weeks of my specialty rotation exploring my interest in eating disorders. Due to Brigham and Women’s Hospital clinical focus, I cannot see myself beginning my career anywhere
