How Does Nutrition Affected My Life

Improved Essays
Throughout the years nutrition has become more than a simple definition of nourishment to me. It has affected my life in ways that I could never imagine, so making the decision to become a Registered Dietitian was elementary. My parents migrated to the United States in the early 1990’s from the Dominican Republic without money and two children ages, four and two. They left everything they knew behind in search for a better life for themselves and their children. Instead, they found themselves living in the projects of South Yonkers with nothing but drugs, violence, and convenient stores surrounding them. As the only American-born child, my mother refused to let our environment dictate our lives, especially our health. Every …show more content…
These presentations usually had audiences of about 200 or more people in which I would guide them in English and/or Spanish on how to prevent and manage diabetes. The most influential workshops I have given was to seniors in the United Senior Citizens Center in Brooklyn, NY. The workshops included topics such as healthy eating, depression and diabetes, and diabetic nephropathy in which I was broadcasted to over 150 seniors. Not only did I learn to publicly speak in English and Spanish, but I also learned to organize and meet deadlines. For example, in preparation for “Step Out Walk,” a nationally held event for the ADA, I coordinated with partners of the ADA to ensure volunteer members were available, funding was provided, and proper stock of materials were present throughout the event. Through my experiences, I have gained an ability to publicly speak organize large social events, as well as work in a team environment. Even though I have overcome great adversity in my life, I still lack clinical experience in which I hope to gain through my fieldwork at St. John’s Hospital in Yonkers, New York this semester and through this dietetic internship.
My short-term goals are to continue my education by obtaining my Master’s degree in the field of nutrition while working to gain clinical experience. I plan to pass the RD exam and use these goals

I was utterly impressed by the various rotations offered through the program, specifically the two weeks at Boston’s Children Hospital to help prepare for my future as a pediatric dietitian. I was also fascinated to see the one-week business plan as a part of the rotations and look forward to developing a plan with fellow peers. Ideally, I would like to spend the two weeks of my specialty rotation exploring my interest in eating disorders. Due to Brigham and Women’s Hospital clinical focus, I cannot see myself beginning my career anywhere

    1. What experiences have you had in nutrition, public health, or related areas that have prepared you for entry into this graduate program? I participated in two undergraduate research projects that developed my passion for research. Both experiences helped me understand ways to develop a clinical question in nutrition, how to be organized, work in a team, and think of possible things that could go wrong before they have gone wrong. I especially enjoyed these research projects because they looked at innovation of products to create healthier options for consumer vanilla taste preference and preventing chronic disease with cranberries.…
