Lastly the mean, standard deviation and confidence interval were calculated for percentage increase of each type of music. As previously mentioned EEG is approximately ±50 μV, therefore data that was above 50μV was removed prior to carrying out the analysis (this includes ID 5, 7 and 9 of all four tables), leaving the results of 14 volunteers. These data were considered to be outliers and were removed to prevent the central tendency from being effected and the results being deemed unreliable. The appropriate statistical analysis was then carried out on the percentage increase columns for alpha amplitude, alpha frequency, beta amplitude and beta frequency of the 14…

The final chapter in Don Campbell and Alex Doman’s book, Healing at the Speed of Sound, provides several interesting points about a personal sound diet. As a musician, I found many of the points very relatable to my training and experiences. Here are a few I found the most relatable. One of the first points of the chapter stresses how listening is subjective. Especially in music, listening to a certain kind of music can have an effect on you posture, mood, and emotion.…

In my trials I investigated whether or not different genres of movie actually significant changed one's heart rate. I tested an overall amount of four people ranging in age from thirteen to forty-two. I used movies from the horror (The Woman in Black), action (Suckerpunch), drama (The Happening), and romance genre (The Vow). I found that the genre with the highest average rate in change of heart rate was Horror with an 12.81% average, followed by drama with 5% average, than romance with a 4.48% average, lastly action -0.05% average. My hypothesis was if I tested 4 different movie genres then the genre with the highest average percent of change in heart rate would be horror because these movie are formulated to exhilarate viewers heart beat.…
These hormone changes can produce “stimulating effects on heart rate [and] breathing…as well as a stimulative effect on those parts of the brain that are associated with reward” (Lingham & Theorell 151). While listening to music, the body undergoes an exhilarating experience in which the heart and lungs are racing. People listen to music because of these feelings they experience. Similarly, because music affects the reward part of the brain, a person listening to music experiences similar feelings as eating food and using drugs. People desire this feeling, and listening to music…
Non-verbal aspects of music such as rhythm and pitch can be altered to encapsulate an artist’s implication within the song, then translating intuitively into the listener’s subconscious. (Giannantonio et al., 2015) • Consumption of music can create an all-encompassing atmosphere for those listening, henceforth allowing an escape towards the ambiance of music whilst simultaneously creating a concordance with the music. (MacDonald et al., 2002) Particularly in those not overtly emotional or maintain a facade within others’ perception, music can thusly allow individuals to express and experience their own vulnerabilities and emotions to their inclinations. (Hall & Du Gay,…
Introduction Previous Research article titled “Exercising with an iPod, Friend, or Neither: Which is Better for Psychological Benefits?” stated that exercising, in general, has been proven to reduce the chances of acquiring a variety of illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, cancer and many other life-threatening conditions. In addition, exercising has psychological benefits as well and may increase self-reliance, decrease stress, and improve moods. One of the ways one’s exercising environment could be improved is by incorporating music in it. Those who exercise to music create a more positive atmosphere to workout in which the person is able to accomplish his or her goals, while being pleasantly distracted by the music compared to those who exercise without music. They hypothesized that those who used a device for music (for ex.an iPod) or had a friend to work out…
