Morally ambiguous characters make it difficult for a reader to define them as either good or evil. These characters are found in several novels, one is found in All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy. John Grady is the main character of this novel, and throughout the story, he varies from displaying good and evil characteristics. In the beginning Grady is a good character, but as the novel goes on, he leans more towards being evil, then in the end, he redeems himself.…

Shane In Jack Schaefer’s short novel Shane it's about well a man named shane as it might imply. Every character in Joe’s Farm is selfless in their own way. This novel is an unforgettable adventure from front to back. Personally my favorite part is when Shane meets Jr. and Jr. has a unloaded gun and Shane’s reflexes kick in and he pulls out his gun and then Joe sorts everything out the reason I like this scene so much is because Shane thinks someone would give their like 10 year old kid a gun.…

Other characters in the book have a solid definition of Ponyboy in their head because they have lived and been with him for a long time. However as shown through the question answers above Ponyboys definition or actions change throughout the book and since the book happened in the time span of a few weeks the changes that overcame Ponyboy were very sudden in appearance to the other characters in the story. These characters think of Ponyboy as a good kid that gets good grades in school and is like the baby the gang. A good example of Ponyboy’s change to be noticed by his friends would be when he breaks a pop bottle by his own free will to defend himself. This action leads to Two - Bit shocked at his sudden change in “Tuffness” and says “Ponyboy,…

Grovenger 1 Society judges the individual by their good and bad decisions are how others see and judge someone. It doesn’t matter what the intentions of their actions are, it is the results that people judge them by. John Steinbeck, in his novel, East of Eden, uncovered and explored this concept. This idea is revealed through his unique writing style and character development. Using characterization and metaphors, John Steinbeck reveals that no matter what you believe, choices are what truly defines who a person is rather than the intentions behind those choices.…

Story’s can change significantly if told by a different character's perspective. Wayne Dyer once said “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” So if we look at the novel Freak the Mighty in Kevin’s perspective, it will drastically change. In the novel Freak the Mighty the storyline would have changed hugely, if told by Kevin’s perspective because we would have heard about his Dad, his challenges, and his family.…

TITLE (HOOK)GIVING UP Short stories are put together in a way that the reader can find meaning on what is being unsaid more then what is being said, allowing the reader to read in between the lines and think critically. Short stories compared to novels have less content, therefore making it more difficult to find the meaning, but with the use of elements of fiction one can effectively grasp as much information as possible. One common theme for “Tall Tales from the Mekong Delta” by Kate Braverman and “Aurora” by Junot Diaz” is destructive relationships and drug influence. The authors of Tall Tales and Aurora use characterization and figurative language to interconnect the thought that when undesirable temptations are displayed to human kind, it can lead to bad decisions and no self-control of the inner self that ultimately lead to physical/verbal abuse and drug use. Characterization is a fundamental piece of a story, allowing the readers to create their own perspective and interpretation of the character.…

Although the primary link in Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes is between its two primary characters, Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade, the relationship between Will’s heroic father Charles and the vile Mr. Dark has a much larger role in shaping the meaning of the text. The relationship between the latter two characters shapes the meaning of the text by identifying its implicit conflict, that of the ongoing battle between morality and wickedness. Even before they actually meet, the pair is introduced as antitheses to each other. Charles is described in his introduction as “not grandfather, not far-wandering, ancient uncle, as some might think, but [a] father” (Bradbury, 11). Such an underwhelming introduction paints him as a pushover, as someone who is not tuned into…
