Have you ever had a friend that you thought you could trust; but then they just stabbed you in the back? You probably have done something that really upset them. You might not even know what you did; but for some reason this person seeks a feeling of revenge and wants your life to be worse in order to make them feel better. This feeling of revenge overcame Montresor in The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe, and took him into a state where he would do crazy things. One of the reasons why Montresor felt that he needed to get revenge over Fortunato was because he was jealous of him . In the story Montresor said to Fortunato “Your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved: you are happy as once I was. You are a man to be missed.” Montresor put a lot of clever thinking into this scheme. This scheme had a lot of thought that went into it which shows that Montresor is very clever. He shows his clever side when Fortunato asked for Montresor “to show a sign that he was a mason; and he produced a trowel. Which is what bricklayers, or masons’ use.” He uses this trowel to foreshadow what is going to happen to his “friend” Fortunato. Montressor being so clever in his scheme planning, planned his scheme Fortunato to do what he wanted him to do. …show more content…
He always knows the right thing to say to make Fortunato do what he wants him to. He manipulates Fortunato by saying he is “On his way to Luchesi.” because he is the one who can tell if it is real amontillado. This made Fortunato want to try and prove himself and show that he is a much better wine taster than Luchesi. This makes Fortunato want to do anything it takes to get in the cellar and try some of the amontillado. Even if the cellar makes him sick, or if he has to go to the farthest part in the cellar he is going to prove to Montresor that he is better than

Montresor’s vengefulness is what first enacted his plan to achieve revenge in the form of Fortunato’s death. Montresor’s intelligence was what led to Fortunato entering the vaults with Montresor in arm, completely unaware of the perils that lay deep underground. Lastly, it was Montresor’s cautiousness that allowed him to not only dispose of Fortunato, but to do so discretely and unknowingly to the general public. These three characteristics of Montresor allowed him to dispose of Fortunato in a way that no one would expect, and to achieve vengeance of the highest…

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” illustrates the wrong-doing of the character Montresor upon his friend, Fortunato, after what seems like a difference in opinions. Readers may wonder what drove Montresor to act as harshly as he did, but the reason may lie in the psychological dysfunctions imposed on his character. Montresor’s narcissistic, antisocial, and psychopathic ways led him to commit an act of murder upon Fortunato. A Narcissistic Personality Disorder is reflected through the character of Montresor.…

This gave me a bigger hint that Montresor was not a very good person. Now, there are a lot more words in this story that make it dark, but there was one particular word that stuck out the most. It was when Montresor was talking about how he would “punish” Fortunato in the worst possible way. This showed me that Montresor was serious about what he was going to do to…

Montresor is very aware of Fortunato’s weakness because he the two have been friends for a long time. Apparently, Fortunato “prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine (Poe 1).” Montresor easily takes advantage of this pretending to have a cask of Amontillado to lure Fortunato to the basement. The Amontillado is a very rare wine so guarantees Fortunato’s attention.…

He then offends Montresor and Luchesi by stating that “You have been imposed upon. And as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado” (4). Unfortunately this leads Fortunato directly into Montresor’s…

During his recall of events he mentions a conversation between himself and Fortunato about his family motto, “Nemo me impune lacessit” which translates into “No one provokes me with impunity”. (167). Montresor was raised with the belief that anyone who provokes him must be punished; therefore, Montresor is able to rationalize that his act of revenge is the only answer to the insults he received by Fortunato. Growing up in a family that preached and lived by its motto, it is reasonable to say that Montresor knows no other way of handling this situation. The family motto contributes to Montresor’s justification that retribution must…

Montresor states, “But then I learned that he had laughed at my proud name, Montresor, the name of an old honored family. I promised myself that I would make him pay for this – that I would have my revenge” (Poe 68). Prior to this statement, Montresor says that Fortunato had hurt him several times before, but that it did not bother him near as much as the present offense. The loss of pride in his name propelled him to seek revenge and kill Fortunato. In Robert E. Morsberger’s essay, he states, “…but when Fortunato dared insult him, he vowed revenge.…

This can be read as a symbolic insight towards Fortunato’s character, clueing to readers that he is like a fool. This is supported throughout the plot as Fortunato is oblivious to the myriad of hints that Montresor gives about his overall plan. For example, when Fortunato states “the cough is merely nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.” And Montresor replies with a “True—true.…

This story is all about revenge and how one man feels as if he has been wronged, therefore he takes the punishment of the other into his own hands. Montresor believes that Fortunato has wronged him in some way, although there is not evidence in the story that Fortunato has in fact done anything to Montresor. Montresor decides himself that he is going to to the judge of what has been done and that he’s going to decide the punishment for it. He tricks Fortunato by asking him to go with him into the vaults to taste what he think is Amontillado.
