Faber is living his life and does not want to make any waves out of fear. He uses Montag to try and create those waves in hope to have a change in society. He hides in Montag’s ear in hopes to listen to what is going on around Montag and in society in general. Faber will not show himself or help Montag any more than giving him information thru his ear and helping calm Montag by reading to him. But Montag still feels controlled with Faber and wants to not feel this way at all. He has bottled up emotions that has been hidden for so long that he lets loose on a few people and shows his true hand on how he is starting to see society as a fireman. Faber tries to show Montag his error and tries to soothe him with readings, but Montag again feels he is being controlled and can’t seem to control his emotions or actions. “I’m not thinking. I’m just doing like I’m told, like always. You said get the money and I got it. I didn’t really think of it myself. When do I start working things out on my own?” He is told to have faith, but tells Faber that he had faith in the others too. On our journey we just have to have faith. Sometimes that faith is put in the wrong people and we learn through our mistakes that the only person we need to follow is Christ himself. Montag is showing us that going from one person to another is not getting anywhere. He is still not thinking for himself and finding out what is right
