Within the first few moments of the multi-genre research project being initially introduced to the class, I already had ideas streaming and floating through my head. Who or what I would do my project on was between two different subjects: Beyoncé Knowles and Michael Jackson. These two American singers are the biggest influencers for me up to do date, and as a matter of fact, they probably will always be. I finally decided upon choosing Michael in the end, for the different reasons. First, I virtually grew up with Jackson influences all around me because my mother would always watch his music videos, his interviews, and play his music in the car...I was “exposed” to him at a young age, if you will. What makes me happy, may not have pertained to Michael Jackson, and vice versa. From the beginning of his life to the end, Michael was known by all as a popstar. By age five, he was the lead singer of the 1960 group the Jackson Five, a collaboration with four of his brothers. In interviews, he often spoke of being forced to concede the typical childhood in exchange for success. However, his prosperity did not come easy, because he had to endure his abusive father for decades. Into adulthood, in the pursuit of happiness, Michael went out of his way to reclaim his lost youth. This is evident through his purchase of Neverland, his abundant care and love for children, and his overall personality. As for myself, his music is unmatched, especially the lyrics. Songs like “Man in the Mirror”, “Earth Song”, and even “Black or White” all provoke deep, intriguing thoughts and emotions that deal with making a change within yourself for well being of the world, caring and giving back to mother nature, and loving someone regardless of race, ethnicity, or skin color. Listening to the background vocals, the musical instruments, lyrics, and the overall creativity so beautifully strung together make for a jolly
