Discrimination In Advertising

When researching different advertisements, it was very alarming to see these ads actually be aired or displayed for all to see. Media has a big influence on the way people think and act towards others. The media have potential to change racial segregation and inequality. Therefore, it is very important for people, companies, and advertisement agencies to really integrate and makes sure what they are putting out is racially and politically correct. First, it was appalling to see the many signs and billboards displayed in Harrison Arkansas, especially a welcome to Harrison billboard with an all white family advertising their beautiful people and no bad neighborhoods. Second, a KFC commercial that aired in Australia as a cricket survival guide. This ad portrayed one Australian male surrounded by many African-Americans, he states “need a tip in an awkward situation,” this is when he holds up a bucket of chicken and the crowd goes silent because they are now eating the chicken, he then says “too easy.” Last ad, is a mountain dew internet ad that …show more content…
In the ad it had a white female that had been violently harassed by a goat that wanted more mountain dew. The scene is of the female on crutches in the police station where she is asked to point out her alleged attacker. When it scans to the line-up the goat is there, but the rest of the people were all black men. This is an ongoing stereotype that all black men are violent because they are usually represented as thug, gangsta, pimp, or rapist. Also, the ad is not taking the matter of women being center of abuse seriously. The product seems to be geared toward anyone and anything, hence the goat. However, it ended up being very offensive and discriminates against black people once again. It was considered to be the most racist advertisement ever

The commercial shows the creator pitching in the idea to different people and all of them saying how stupid the idea is. This of course brings the humor into the picture. Me personally I also think to myself what was going on through everybody's head who was on the making of this. Why do they put a white beautiful woman solving the protest? Why does everybody in the shoot look like models off of American Eagle?…

The issue this Ad is addressing are the barriers of racism. By using various races of children, they emphasize how vastly different their futures can possibly be. The prevailing issue with society is it elevates itself to a delusional height of grandeur and sees any race other than Caucasian as lesser than. The superiority complex that so encases the majority of society today, compared to anyone that happens to be colored or of lesser fortune, is astounding.…

    Gender Bias In Advertising

Societal understanding of gender over the years has shaped the way people treat gender roles, stereotype, and humans as a whole. This in no way is helped by media representation. Because gender typically encompasses a great portion of one’s sense of personal identity, the issue arises that improper attitudes toward gender influences people’s own sense of identity, and in many cases, self-worth. Not only is personal morale in danger, but gender bias also affects scientific research; unconscious associations and unquestioned assumptions lead to inaccurate data and harmful conclusions.…

Ziege points out many negative stereotypes across a various amount of ads, one being a photo of Beyonce where her skin has been significantly lightened by a technique called “whitewashing” to make her appear more white. African-American men and women have been afflicted with offensive clichés for a number of years. This is apparent in both ads from the 21st century and nonexistent in the ads from the 50’s and 60’s, because African Americans would not have been given the chance to be seen in these ads due to Budweiser’s conformant attitude towards society's discrimination against them at that…

Advertising has been used by companies and organizations for hundreds of years and has taken many different forms. Most of the time this is through visually appealing images and language. Advertising has a significant impact on society, by shaping gender roles, appearance standards, stereotypes, and sexual norms for both women and men, ultimately helping to mold the culture of the time. The advertising industry needs to quickly change their ways because of the strong desire for gender equality in today’s society.…
