During McMurphy´s stay at the ward Chief Bromden thought that if ¨The Combine [didn't get] to him in all years; what makes that nurse think she's gonna be able to do it on a few weeks¨ (Kesey 161). McMurphy is a character that doesn't conform to society so Bromden thought that it was silly that the nurse thought she would be able to make him conform. McMurphy let him non-conformist side show the first day he got there when the black boys were giving him the order to get in the shower and ¨he [didn´t] just submit with a week little yes, [instead] he [told] them back in a loud, brassy voice that he's already plenty clean, thank you¨ unlike the other patients who did everything they were told to do (Kesey 11). The longer McMurphy was in the ward, the more he influenced the other patients. Chief Bromden would always conform to whatever he was told to do before McMurphy entered his life. Until the day McMurphy invited him on the boat trip which made him realize he didn't have to listen to what the Big Nurse told him to do because ¨A man going finishing with two whores from Portland [didn´t] have to take that crap¨ (Kesey 225). The fact that he was going on a trip with McMurphy helped him realize he didn't have to let the Big Nurse treat him like he was weak and always ordered him to clean and build the courage to not listen to
