The second change is that Mattie went through is growing to be independent. In the beginning of the book, Mattie woke up very late and was lazy. Polly would do a lot of the housework instead of Mattie doing the work. Later in the novel, she becomes more independent. On pg 85, the author states,” I splashed over and started to pick the fruit.” This shows that she became more independent: She is getting food for herself and her grandfather. Mattie thinks through problems and doesn't ignore them now. For example, Mattie wanted to go the market when sickness was all about in the first few chapters of the book. Many chapters later, Mattie becomes more careful and cautious. The author shows this on page 185, “They would never comb her hair or tell her stories.” This shows that Mattie was cautious because when she about to return Nell she saw that the orphan house was too crowded and they wouldn't treat her well.
In this book, Fever 1793, Mattie has changed by becoming stronger, astonishingly independent and a heap of cautiousness. Seeing this, we can conclude that the changes of a person, can be good or bad. Many changes happened to Mattie's character, but all this happened because of the outbreak of Yellow
