Greek philosopher Aristotle once said, “Good habits formed at youth make all the difference” (Aristotle) . Many people have an experimented with drugs at some point of their adolescent lives. One drug thought of to be the most common among teenagers is marijuana. As Aristotle may agree that bad habits form in youth can also make a big difference. Teenagers must become aware that there are many more negative effects than positive that marijuana can have on their lives. By creating awareness teenagers may be less likely to use marijuana.
There are many negative effects that marijuana has on teenagers one may be damaging the developing brain. Krista Lisdahl, director of the brain imaging and neuropsychology lab at University of Wisconsin, states, “Think of the teen years … as the ‘last golden opportunity to make the brain as healthy and smart as possible’” ( ). Your teenage years should then be a time when people should focus on positively affecting their brains. Gregory Fritz, author for the American Academy of Child & Adolescent P, claimed that one of the effects of marijuana use is, “Problems with memory and concentration” (Fritz). Some other negative effects stated by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry include, “problems with concentration, increased aggression, risky sexual behavior, risk of suicide and increased risk of psychosis” (Fritz). These effects should really outweigh the positive effects that marijuana has on teenagers. When really thinking about marijuana use it would not be smart to gamble long term negative effects just for that good feeling. Something that can be studied in the future may include different ways to create awareness to teenagers that can move then away from even wanting to try or be peer pressured into trying
