How Does Life Affect Poe's Life

Literature has the power to go beyond just telling a story; through literary elements it allows readers to immerse themselves inside the story, address universal truths, or even relate to an author's life. Such is the case of famous writer Edgar Allan Poe in his short stories including The Raven and The Tell Tale Heart among others. Poe's life events unfold in his literary works and are portrayed in the style and mood in which he writes, the way the plot develops, and the overall theme of his pieces. Poe's loss of loved ones through out his life together with despair and tragedy emanate feelings of sadness and create a gloomy atmosphere perceived in his writing. At a young age, Poe's dad left and his mother died. He was and orphan but a man took care of him. Poe did not have a good relationship with this man due to their constant fights about poe's gambling addiction. Poe attended the university of Virginia but had to leave after the first semester due to financial issues. He married a woman that he really loved and after that women died. All of this tragic events affected the way Poe wrote his stories and made his iconic style. Since Poe wrote stories of suspense and macabre, he made all of his plots develop in a very similar way. Since he is mentally unstable, his stories became biased due to the fact that he doesn't think like a regular human. When the audience reads Poe's stories, they have to take in mind that he is not a trustworthy narrator. For example in the tell tale heart, the narrator says he hears the beating heart of a dead body which is practically impossible. He was also an alcoholic so he could have been under the influence of alcohol while he wrote which would make him an author with no credibility.
