To Kill A Mockingbird is a 1961 Pulitzer Prize winning book, that explains a lot of the problems that occurred in the early 1900’s due to segregation, racism, and discrimination. The book really shows how racist and mean a whole community and individuals can actually be. Although people may be mean, there are still nice people in the story who are not racist or discriminative of Black people. The award winning novel also shows how bad it was for the African American’s had to live and how they were treated, just because of their skin color. These people prove this time period is not a very pleasant one. Scout's teacher, Miss Gates, is an example, “I heard it’s time somebody taught ‘em a lesson, they were gettin’ way above themselves, and’ the next thing they think they can do is marry us,”(331). In this part Scout's teacher was talking about how terrible of a man Hitler was killing all the people because of their religion. So Scout is saying that she is actually a bad person because she is discriminating against people by the color of their skin, and shows how mean people hare. Miss Gates said this at Tom Robinson’s trial when he was guilty of rape. Even during the trial the whole courtroom was segregated, “The colored balcony ran along three walls of the courtroom like a second-story veranda,” (219). This shows that everything in this time period is separated by color of your skin. All of the whites got the ground floor and front row seats, where blacks got the upper level seats that are harder to hear and see the trial. Even though everything is segregated some people were actually not mean and cruel and saw
