Vincent was accidentally affected by one of his fathers science experiments (stuck by a needle with nanobots meant to repair Lombax DNA) and turns into a Lombax over time. Vincent's Father keeps video diaries of the whole thing. Vincent becomes a full Lombax on his 4th birthday. The next day, a law is made saying all non-human beings have no rights and must give priority to humans. Fearing Vincent's life from the ANH Party (Anti Non-Human), his father and mother wipe his memory and bring him to a close friend (Grim; Grimroth Razz) on a safe planet (Veldin). The friend, after hearing the situation and agreeing to help, gives him a new name (Ratchet) and raises him in his garage.

Ratchet and Clank go into a ship and Clank asks Ratchet if he can legally fly yet. Ratchet responds, "Well, I"m not 'legally' allowed to fly without Grim until I turn …show more content…
As Ratchet gets to join the Galactic Rangers since he and Clank helped them protect the city (Aleero City), he is on the news. Ratchet's parents back on Earth recognize the name and the Lombax. They call Grim, and come to Veldin after the Universe is safe (thanks to Ratchet). After Ratchet, Clank, and the Galactic Rangers defeat Drek, Ratchet returns to the garage and meets his parents and sees the video diaries his father taped, eleven years after he was brought there. (Ratchet is now 15) Ratchet meets his younger sister, Monica (ten, unborn when Ratchet was sent to Veldin), who keeps (force) feeding him treats.

At some point before Ratchet meets his family, Ratchet and Clank find The Demensionator, but it doesn't function. After a laugh from kicking it, and after Ratchet says "I just can't catch a break, can I?" Clank says "I am sorry." Ratchet says "Eh, it's okay.". Clank asks Ratchet if he would use it to find the other Lombaxes. Ratchet responds about how even if he could, he would not stay and instead come back to this demention with Clank and
