` A little over 80% of parents tell their children that life will not be easy but even when life does get hard to never give up.Out of those 80%, 54% tell their children of when they had a hardship and how they overcame it. Similarly in poem “ Mother to Son” written by Langston Hughes, it portrays a mother telling her son that life for her “ ain't been no crystal stair” and it won't be easy for him either. The mother tells how her staircase is full of splinters and has bord torn up but she never gave up. The purpose of “ Mother to Son” is to portray the them even when life gets hard, people should never give up.
The author uses figurative language to tell others that when life gets hard don't give up. For example the tacks and splinters in lines 3 through 4 symbolize the hard times and the mother's life. Moreover the splinters and tacks also give the saying “life for me aint been no crystal stair” a better picture. When the authors said this I painted a picture of how her life was hard. Another example is when the author uses lines 10 through 14 to shift the poem to not only show her hard life but show how she never gave up and it still telling her son to never give up. For instance when the mother tells of how “ life for [her] ain't been no crystal stair” (Hughes 20) but she never stopped climbing. This shows that the mother never gave up even though her staircase was not made out of Crystal. Furthermore when the authors said this it showed how the character mother is strong and will never give up another example in lines 10 through 14 the speaker is portrayed as a strong woman who is still climbing and is still telling her son to never give up.Therefore by using the character mother such a strong image is shown how even when life got hard she never gave up and neither should
