In this short story, “Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones is characterized through various indirect characterizations. First of all, after Mrs. Jones encountered the boy she “simply turned around and kicked him,” because he “ran up behind her and tried to steal her purse” (54). Her actions proved that she is a tough and confident women because she was not scared of him. Also, Mrs. Jones’s actions manifested she is tough as nails because of her willingness to fight back. Furthermore, Mrs. Jones had brought Roger to her house when she “got up and went behind the screen,” while she “did not watch if the boy was going to run now, nor did she watch her purse” (58).
