How does Lady Macbeth demonstrate power?
In the Elizabethan era it is expected for women to be the weaker sex, also for them to be the ones to cook for their fathers or husbands. When they are not married, women - or girls because they used to get married at a young age - they were the property of their fathers to then be passed on to their future husbands, so this demonstrates a sign of weakness. It is also expected for them to be weak physically and for men to do the part to look after their families. Including the fact that men are able to cope more under pressure than women if they have done something to be ashamed of. But in Macbeth we get to see the act of a remarkably …show more content…
How Lady Macbeth was showing power in between the lines of this quote was because what she was saying was that she was going to do the rest of the bloody work for Macbeth - as he was too afraid of the guilt that he would have to face later. This shows for Lady Macbeth is that she’s not afraid of doing this kind of work even though the consequences might be crucial ( an execution might be arranged ). Apart from that it also displays how quick thinking Lady Macbeth was to make a plan. Although this could link back to how stress free she was, it also states of how she is in charge of the situation. This was strange because normally we would expect the man to be in charge. But at the same time we get the perspective that Lady Macbeth was a wonderful leader for a woman, and would take charge if needed. Also in this quote it shows how quick Lady Macbeth was to make a plan, towards the end of the quote it says: “I’ll gild the faces of the groom withal.” This basically means that she would put blood upon the faces of the drunken bodies of Banquo’s knights to make it seem that they were the ones to kill the king ( Banquo ). To sum the evidence in this paragraph, it would be the quote itself and then - in the play - Lady Macbeth killing the king later herself to then report to gilding the faces of the drunken …show more content…
Or to be clearer, what the quotes meaning is what’s done is done, there would be nothing to cleanse it away. The way of how this demonstrates Lady Macbeth’s loss of power could be because of how she believes she would not be forgiven by her sin. Or it could also be the way her sin has affected her potential as a powerful woman. Our evidence for how Lady Macbeth presents her loss of power is by her actions later on: which was by her death because of suicide. This is seen as weak because of why she did it, also because of how she couldn’t handle the pain so she just killed herself so she could rest in peace. As seen before, Lady Macbeth has committed the murder of Banquo without the slightest worry of how God was going to forgive her. Whereas Macbeth did burn up of guilt right after murdering the king ( Banquo ) but then reported to his normal self after a long while in the play. This shows that Lady Macbeth had too many worries about the murder she took part in and let it bother her later on. To condense the phrases in the quote up, it would be as follows: “Here’s the smell of blood still.” by this Lady Macbeth means that when she looks at her hands she imagines what she did, and the blood on her hands represents the things that she did to her king. Also, apart from when she looks at her hands she imagines murdering the king,
