Psychological Insights of an I nsect What is psychology? Psychology is the fascinating science of the human mind and behavior and is commonly used to deepen insight into the thoughts and behaviors of the characters. A psychological approach enlarges the number of interpretive strategies we use while reading, which is immensely important when gaining knowledge about human behavior. The conceptual events that occur within The Metamorphosis can be analyzed further through a psychological perspective, and also when analyzing the recurrent symbols of the mind and of society as a whole. In the light of the Freudian psychological theories, The Metamorphosis can be chronically examined by symbolism and imagery with the purpose to elucidate the psychological condition of the main character. According to Sigmund Freud, the parts of the brain include the unconscious and the conscious but human behavior is motivated by psychic forces over which we have limited conscious control. The first image that illuminates Gregor’s unconscious can be seen throughout the opening scene with Gregor’s realization of his transformation. In the first few sentences of his story, Kafka asks the reader to suspend reality and accept a large distortion through his turning of Gregor Samsa into an insect. Gregor’s transformation into an insect acts as a metaphor for his human life. Based on the events at the beginning of the novel, the reader comes to the belief that Gregor's transformation into an insect is quite literal as Kafka's blatant narration states that "it becomes no dream" (Kafka 41).
