How Does Joseph Heller Use Bureaucracy In Catch-22?

Decent Essays
The modern era is governed by the bureaucratic practices humans have created throughout history. The deficiencies of this system are the source of all issues within Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. “Bureaucracy” by Bert Rockman and Harvard Business Review’s“When Bureaucracy Is Actually Helpful, According to Research”, by Daisy Chung and Beth Bechky, outline proper bureaucratic procedures. Death is an overwhelming thought in the lives of most people, a threat to all ages, races, and genders, able to strike at any moment, at any time. People come to fear it, phobias thus generated, danger and rebellion seen in the lives of only those self-destructive with nothing at stake. Sometimes even those that put themselves in harm’s way, whether it be from their own mind or the mind of another, find themselves fearing the danger, trying to escape it in every way possible, even if it puts themselves in sight of even further jeopardy, such as captivity or isolation. In the story Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, Yossarian and most of his squadron do what they can to escape the war and the overwhelming danger and insanity of it in general to return…

Significant controversy over the question if the big business men of the late nineteenth century were “robber barons” has been widely debated by historians. Notably, Howard Zinn (yes) and John S. Gordon (no) have documented their reasonings behind their opinions on if the big business men truly were “robber barons” or simply “captains of industry”. Most significant was Howard Zinn’s argument that they were robber barons based on how they treated workers, as well as the issues of scandals, bribery, and corruption. The workers were met with terrible conditions and treatment from the impersonal business men they worked for. Scandals, bribery, and corruption put more money into the pockets of these big business men in an unjust manner.…

Humans have an innate nature of abusing their powers, one is unable to perceive the “big picture” or to devote oneself, for the good of society over their own, their “stature” compared with others, “below them” seems to have more significance to them. This corrupt nature among men who have a common goal, for the war to end, is shown in the novel Catch-22. In the fictional novel Catch-22, by Joseph Heller, Joseph uses a satiric tone throughout the novel to express the phenomena of “Catch 22”, he displays a corrupt and nefarious trait with a descent of rationality amongst the officers towards the soldiers through symbolism, imagery and comedic irony. Competition is a driving force of nature, promoting growth and forcing us to be more creative. The concept of competition is a powerful idea that is crucial to everyday life. The economy and businesses are shaped by competitive and uncompetitive practices, driven by educational hierarchies, competition for Wall Street careers, and businesses for market shares and profits. In “Project Classroom Makeover,” “Biographies of Hegemony,” and “Rent Seeking and the Making of an Unequal Society,” written by Cathy Davidson, Karen Ho, and Joseph Stiglitz, respectively, all authors discuss the ideology that both competitive and uncompetitive behaviors shape the individuals of modern America. There are two main approaches of justifying CEO compensations. The first would be to justify high CEO compensations from a business or a managerial perspective. In other words, we would need to justify the pay-gap between chief executives and ordinary workers. The second would be to justify high CEO compensations from an economic perspective. An economic lens takes into account the rising economic inequalities, which is largely assumed to be non-existent or insubstantial in the first method, as well as taking into account the principals of supply and demand and so on.…

A bureaucracy is a systematic organisational structure that is hierarchical and rigid which focusses on centralised power. This centralised power provides the organisation with the authority to direct and control employees via an autocratic leadership style. Each employee specialises in an area, however, this specialisation can actually de-skill employees. In contrast, a post-bureaucracy employs a horizontal structure with decentralised power which enables employee empowerment (Clegg et al. 2011). This essay will argue that postbureaucracies are better at delivering change and innovation.…

During winter break, Hofstra’s Honors College provided me with the opportunity to participate in their Shadowship program, where students shadow Honors College alumni at their place of work for a day. So, for one day in early January, three Hofstra students and I were able to go to Northwell Health (previously known as Northshore LIJ) and visit their finance department, with Honors College alumni, Michelle Albanese. The day consisted of the four of us meeting her department members and some of the company’s senior executives, as well as learning about the healthcare industry, with regards to business and finance. Albeit it having been a very beneficial day, I couldn’t shake the feeling of how competitive the environment was. There is a concept,…
